OMG - Estimate for Repairs

I'm a bit speechless and could use a bit of help. I've had this 2001 Limited for a couple of months. Took it in to have the dealership service department look it over and give me an estimate of work that would need to be done...

$4,500 for CATS? Oh my god. If you have a few minutes, please review this estimate of work to be done and offer some calming news...The rear CAT was replaced 6mos ago, they are saying the front one is bad and has blown the rear one, so they both need replaced. I can see that the rear CAT is new and that it was welded in place - if this helps any...

Sorry for the long post below and thanks in advance for your time...

Actual list price on the first cat part number is 1592.78. second cat part number is 1365.90 it also includes piping, it is not just the cat alone. on the brake pads ask them if they can get the 04465-AZ005-TM brake pad (may be regional and not available by you) list price on the az006 is 55.00. if not those pads list out at 99.00.

All the other parts seem to be just a little higher than list so you may be able to negotiate those down some.

RECAP

Yes toyota cats are extremely expensive. but since you have a California emissions truck that has raised the price a bit

Try Firestone or sts, am sure there's is someone local with mechanical knowledge that can give you a hand.
You can get a second 4 runner with that amount of money.

Id do a bunch of the work myself, since even the east stuff like breaks are mostly labor cost.thats how they get you, charging $100hr labor

Brake fluid is super easy just get a friend to help pump the breaks!

They have calipers and brakes as two diff jobs also?? You would be removing the brakes to get to the calipers haha. You can do the tundra brakes for half the price they are charing you. Run..Run...Away..Fast!

$700 for valve gasket!! thats a super easy one just takes a little time, cost you $50 lol

are you getting a code? what makes you want to replace the cats?

I love how the timing belt and water pump are separate jobs. you have to remove everything when doing the timing belt so the water pump is a few bolts at that point.... so there should be no labor involved with that one.

I would not give them any of my business, just leave since I believe they are trying to milk you.

That's what I'm worried about...At he same time, for 11k (my cost plus these repairs, I should have a truck that will be in great shape, no?)

I don't have to get this thing inspected until next April. Will driving around with bad cats cause any damage to other parts of the vehicle?

That $300 break got you could do yourself for like $50 or even spend $300 and upgrade the calipers to tundra breaks.

I've got the P0420 code - and I've replaced the rear O2 sensor already...

I tried bleeding the brakes with my wife pumping the brakes, but stopped getting flow after a few squirts and didn't want to mess anything up by continuing to try.

With valve covers leaking "badly" is anything bad going to happen in the next couple thousand miles? I don't have any oil on the floor yet...

I guess I can do this, just need to make the time to do it.

No it wont hurt anything if you put it off, just make the engine messy. make sure you check the oil levels every so often.

Do you have smog ? I kept ignoring my 420 code for like 2 years before I finally replace the rear o2 sensor. now it only comes on every few months and I just reset it lol.

time for a cat delete? That's what I would do. Do they have emission testing where you live?

I don't see any smog coming from the tailpipe ever...is that what you mean?

It doesn't sound like anything here is crucial to have done right now. Maybe I should just pay them the diagnostic fee and move on and think about things for a while.

The truck doesn't have to be inspected until next April, so I can figure out the cats over time.

Essentially once the timing belt job is completed you be up to date on maintenance for about 90k miles. Valve covers leaking suck on these because of toyotas design of the intake plenum. if and when you do the VC make sure they reseal the cam plugs and the front and rear of the heads. If it isnt done they will keep leaking and you will have to tear down again.

By smog he means emission testing, that's what they call it in the governments republic of california

Looking at these part numbers online, it looks like they bolt on...
Is replacing both cats "with piping" a bolt-on job?

Is it easy...other than opening one's wallet for the parts?

Do you have a check engine light? I would be alot of money its the O2 sensors not the cats.

(aka <$100 instead of thousands)

You can get full exhaust aftermarket and bolt up with not much issues.

If you tq down the valve cover bolts to spec it may fix your oil leak.

Nothing is really major, brakes are good to have working great but you dont need the dealer to rape you on these installs. OEM parts are good to use but you dont need OEM when coming to exhaust piping.

Good luck!

Yes toyota does bolt on exhaust, part of the reason it is so expensive.

I've ordered both CATs myself as I have the CEL and both those codes all for $330 and it's bolt on. I know a lot of peeps on here have replaced CATs a lot cheaper. I ordered the kit from EBAY (all toyo parts) for $300 and going to a mechanic come to the house and help me do all the work for $200.

Just an option.

Good luck.

I live in Texas, so I think they do test emissions during inspections...

Depends on the county. I'm down here in Hays county and we don't do emissions but Travis county does. They just look for a check engine light when doing an inspection down here.

Also, I've priced the tundra brake upgrade with pads, calipers, and rotors from O'reilly's for $450. Fluids and brackets you are looking at another $100. That's for both sides combined not just one. Cats you can buy universal aftermarket high flow cats all day long for a $100 and have any exhaust shop cut them out and weld them in for $50. If your truck is originally a Texas truck you'll only have 1 catalytic converter and not 2. You can get a timing belt and water pump done at a mechanics shop with them providing everything for a $1000 and even cheaper if you bring your own belts and pump and parts.

You got it right. They are just looking for money to be honest, and their prices are not good. No amount of repairs is worth $6,800.

Other than the brakes, nothing is going to blow up on your no matter what they said. Take your 4Runner to a brake shop that is trusted (don't know what they have in Texas) and ask for a second opinion on the brakes. You should get a much more reasonable estimate on what needs to be done.

If you are the DIY type, many of us have done the brakes ourselves and honestly, the front disk brakes are not hard at all, even replacing rotors/calipers.

Oil leaks happen and it's not a big deal. The valve cover gasket gets rigid over time and doesn't seal. Take it to another shop and they will do it for half that price. There's no benefit to having a "Toyota" gasket over an "aftermarket" gasket, it's all just rubber anyway!
