OMG - Estimate for Repairs

Dude ...... INDEPENDENT JAPANESE VEHICLE mechanic.

For the most part yes, I agree. However my local dealer doesn't operate this way. Ask about a brake job and they wanted to turn my rotors and use the same pads to save money lol. Found out my rotors were out of spec and they used NAPA rotors. I didn't care. $100 out the door. The service writer owns a 99 BTW. He knows the drill.

Son of a turdslapper!!!!! $&#%€#£

I got the cats today, but the gaskets didn't arrive. Went to Autozone, they had gaskets that cross referenced Walker parts 31384 & 31374.

They don't fit!!!!! Too small!!!!!

Now my exhaust is all apart and I can't drive this thing.

Question: are they really too small or should they somehow stretch? Any help?

Oh, and I need to be at work at 6:30 tomorrow morning...

Not entirely accurate. It maynot be the caliper that is seized. The caliper may have damage and the pins, or one piston is siezed.

Either way, that dealer quote seems bloated to hell and back.

OP, what method did they use to verify the catalyst needs to be replaced?
http://www.lbcc.edu/attc/documents/BAR-2011-CAT-testing-methods.pdf

They said they do not test them. They only read the P0420 code, know that one cat was replaced and 'are 100% sure the other cat is bad.' They also said that since the first cat wasn't replaced and is now bad that it likely ruined the 2nd cat.

Of course, the possibility that it wasn't the cat in the first place never occurred to them. We've had dealer techs on here swearing that P0420 can't solved a sensor change. If so, I needed cats three years ago. (I didn't).

Finally got all the correct gaskets and it all went together nicely.

I took it for a 21 mile test drive and the CEL hasn't gone off yet. I was hoping to see it turn itself off instead of clearing the codes with my scanner.

How long should it take to reset itself? (Assuming the new cats are doing their job correctly...)

Dude,

If you were closer I would pack my tools up and drive down there and do most this with you. Hell I might even bring some buddy's and make it a road trip to save a yota.

This is just stupid cost. As the great him said. Find a good local Tech who knows Toyotas and have him do it. Most all of this is easy easy stuff you can do at home any how. That brake stuff is crap I'm sorry. You know how many Brake Flushed we have done in our shop in the last year. I can think of only two, because the systems were not that bad. The shit the dealers come up with some times.

Have driven about 45 miles now. Half highway, half country roads.
My scanner still shows p0420 01/01.
Does the 01/01 mean it's code 1 of 1, or is that bank 1 sensor 1 - the AF Sensor?
Wouldn't the AF sensor show P1135?
I have not replaced the AF sensor, just the rear O2 sensor.

The good news (I guess) is that last night, there was the P0420 code and 2 pending codes: a P0420 & P0440 and both pending codes are gone...for now.

Thanks in advance for the additional help!

Oh, one last thing - the joint between the two cats didn't close all the way during the install. The brackets were starting to bend as I tightened them down, so there is still a small gap 1/8" or less where I can see the gasket between the brackets. Should that be OK? I couldn't find torque specs for the exhaust bolts anywhere. OK, this morning's book is done!

I pulled the joint apart...

It appears that either the pipe coming from the first cat won't fit inside the pipe to the 2nd cat, or that the gasket won't compress enough to allow the brackets to mate completely.

It appears there is plenty of forward play from the 2nd cat to allow it if they would.

Can I continue to re-compress these gaskets without issue, or should I get all new gaskets, take it all apart, test-fit everything (I didn't do this before install) and see where the issue might be?

Try Firestone or sts, am sure there's is someone local with mechanical knowledge that can give you a hand.
You can get a second 4 runner with that amount of money.

Plus if you're concerned about cat theft (happens a lot over here) the exhaust shop can have the cats welded on so it's a lot harder to take off.

I wouldn't bother with welding them. The thieves don't waste time unbolting the cats. They use a sawzall and just cut the pipe. Welds wouldn't even slow them down.

Haven't had one stolen yet, but I was thinking the same thing. Welding one to the pipes would be a waste of time.
