OMG my catalytic converter was stolen

The other night someone stole my catalytic converter! What a surprise when my wife started it to drive it that day. lol

Has anyone had this problem?

Does anyone have a writeup to guide me for doing it myself? ('98/3.4 v6 Limited)

That type of theft has been big news for a few years now. I'm surprised that you've never heard of it. 4Runners and other SUVs are easy targets because the thieves can slide right under them and have easy access to the cat.

They steal them because you can get $150ish (last i checked), at a scrapyard for them.

Happened to me about 8 months ago parked at a BART station in the Bay Area. Insurance will cover it (assuming you have comprehensive coverage). INSIST that insurance cover the cost of a replacement OEM Cat (about $1000 or so from Toyota). Technically, they are better/last longer than an aftermarket one. Get insurance to cut you a check and then go to a muffler shop and get a quality aftermarket one welded on for ~$400. Keep the change as your "inconvenience". Perfectly legal, since the aftermarket cat TECHNICALLY isn't as good as OEM, but will last well over the remaining life of the vehicle...

Absolutely demand an O.E.M. relacement!!!! They cost more like $2000, if they cut the tubes instead of unbolting it. When mine was stolen in Cali,where I use to live, my agent tried to give me $300 to have a cheap aftermarket put in. I had to have one cause of Cali's strict polution control laws. My agent, after my repeated demands for an O.E.M. replacement buckled and wrote me a check for $1800 dollars. I then drove to the cheapo shop and had a$300 one put on and put the 15honey in my pocket. I figured if I had an O.E.M. stolen the frickin ins. Nazis owed me the replacement cost. I felt no responsibility, after recieving the check of course, to do what they would have me do. They thief, acctually did me a favor, as I used the money for other things I needed HeHeHe !!! DONT BUCKLE DEMAND O.E.M. REPLACEMENT!!!!! It may take some time to get them to do it, but they will if you push!

agreed. it WILL take some time and haggling with insurance, like everything else insurance deals with. But it's your right to get an OEM replacement, or be monetarily compensated accordingly.
