Since Mobil 1 Extended Performance is already a 15,000 mile oil, the 20,000 mile annual protection line must be a slight reformulation/improvement.
Seems like better marketing to use the 'annual protection' campaign anyways.

I dimly remember reading some formulations of Mobil 1 are a synthetic/dino blend. The cheaper version is a heavy blend, Extended Performance is more synthetic, and this Annual version says "Ultimate Full Synthetic" on the label. If I was a Mobil 1 guy I'd use either the EP or this new one and follow the Mobil time & mileage guidelines.
I don't mind paying a teeny bit extra for extended intervals, been using Amsoil 1yr/25k mile for 30 years and that's about $12 per quart, their matching filters are pricey also. But, like Mobil, if they say their guidelines work then it's fine with me to change the oil less often and actually spend less money per year.
I see Mobil recommends using their extended protection filter which is $15 like the Amsoil extended interval filter - the bottom line to me is take advantage of extended intervals.
Same goes for synthetic in the differentials. Shamelessly shilling Amsoil, I use Amsoil Severe Gear 100k mile, why swap out that stinky messy stuff if you don't have to?
That oil would work well in a street vehicle only. See a dirt road or temps over 100? Forget it. Way too much relies on clean oil these days like vvti. I'd be changing that filter at 6 months max since there isn't a 1year/20k filter. So that kinda defeats the purpose of an annual oil change.
Look into Amsoil's version of this. I run it in my vehicle and so far even with heavy off-roading the oil tests good and I could probably run it longer than 10k intervals (they suggest 15k for severe service). Amsoil has "extended filters for their oil.
