One little, two little, three little breather tubes?

In my searches, I have come across people who said the 3rd gens have two breather tubes in the engine compartment and 4th gens have one. In my 99 SR5 V6, I only have one, should I be concerned that the other one may have been disconnected fallen out, etc.? Or do some later year third gens only have one? The FSM and online parts diagrams are not conclusive either, so if you have a 99 what is in your compartment? Thanks - Chris :fish:

jrzee2000, yes a breather tube for the front differential but what I read was this statement from another post while searching -

"First, the 3rd gen 4runner comes from the factory with 2 extended breathers ALREADY installed. One is for the front differential, and the other for either the transmission or transfer case (not sure which). You can see these two breather hose/cap by looking into the engine bay on the driver's side...it is the along the wheel well. You should see two hose with two silver caps side by side."

So what I am asking is should there be one or two per the post quote above? I have one, but am I missing something and there should be two as stated. Thanks - Chris

No problem.

I know that mine DID NOT come with one for the transfer case, but there is a breather in the transfer case.

If you take the shifter boot off you can clearly see it. It'll be on the drivers side by shifter.

I have a 2001 that has 2 breathers for the front diff. Well, actually one comes off the diff. The 2001 has an electric ADD (automatic disconnecting differential) with an additional breather tube. If I'm not mistaken, pre-01 4Runners had vacuum actuated ADDs. I guess with the vacuum ADD there isn't an additional breather tube.

The transmission's breather tuber is on top of it. it is a short rubber hose about 2 inches long.

There are breathers all over transfer case though. The actuator has breather on it (those with center diffs and push button 4wd), the transfer-case has a breather on it and the void between the transfer case and the transmission has a breather on it...

The trans breather is on the bell housing.

Drop that trans and get to it. About the only way.

My '99 5 Speed only has one diff breather as far as I know. Driver side fender.

Unless the tranny and transfer breathers are of the Toyota OEM one-way type, in which not much of anything---including air---is going to get into the trans or transfer through the breather.

It is a breather, not a check valve. Water will pass through if submerged.

Beside off-roaders, I have not heard of any/many instances where the tranny or front diff has issues with internal pressures in street and dirt road level driving.

Making sure that rear diff is vented well is a simple and necessary item to add to your list of must-dos. A few bucks and an hour of your time for peace of mind...

There's really no reason to extend the transmission or transfercase breathes. They are on top of each other. If you get water that high. Your whole interior is going to be soaked and under water dude.

Rear axles with elocker has 2 breathers. One for the axle and one for the elocker motor. I extended both to the gas tank.

I'm going to say. One is for the housing and one for the add system or whatever you call it.

It's like the same for the elocker axles. 2 breathers

Front diff breather and ADD motor breather. '96-'00 have 1 breather and vacuum lines for a vacuum actuator instead.
