One month out of warranty... 'and here we go'

bumper-to-bumper warranty is 3 years/36k miles, whichever occurs first. years, in your case. you're covered. take it in.

My 2012, with 10,440 miles on her, runs out of bumper-to-bumper warranty three years from the date she was first put into service in 2015.

Sorry about your problems.

WOW, How'd I miss that?? Thanks bro! Okay, then while it's there, I need to have them check the 'Entune' system again. Seems to take forever (60 sec) waiting for a response from the prompter when using the phone's 'voice command', ever since they did the software update. I'll be sure to post what was found wrt the no start; there are others here that have had much of the same thing. Thanks again to all who have posted!

rigtec, cheers

Here's the follow-up,

I took the truck in to get a check-up on Monday. At first I felt that I was going to have to 'act-up' at the asst. service mgr's desk because of his line of questioning (interrogation) e.g., "is there anything in that car that shouldn't be in there?" and... "we train our technicians to look for things like aftermarket stereo equipment, lighting set-ups, any additional accessories that shouldn't be in there, and then they determine the cause of the customer's problem..." Well I know that I'm guilty of that on at least three counts, but I needed them to find the real problem and not try to blame it on something else that has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I bout' flipped out right there in the service coordinator's office on this man's method! "...That's not the proper way to approach a suspected ECU/software issue!" I exclaimed! (angrily) :mad2: "...THATS' THE PROPER WAY TO CONDUCT A WITCH HUNT for cryin' out loud!! His objective pissed me off because he didn't want to find the problem. This person would much rather find a way out of their obligatory responsibilities then to eradicate the actual problem, and keep a good customer satisfied... "and, that's just not good P.R.!"

Before I walked out of his cubical, I let him know that everyone else there, including his boss, knows me (the wife and I have purchased more than one vehical there), and that I was a tech myself so not to come to back to me with anything stupid or there was gonna be trouble! I needed a walk so I went out to look at their inventory on the lot. About 20 minutes later I got a phone call. It was him again and wanted to let me know what the tech reported. I told him that I was perusing the lot and that I'd be right there.

When I got to his cubical, he seemed to have changed his attitude to this whole thing. He explained that the tech could see that there had been an issue with the ECU from the 'history log'. At that point I excused myself and went to speak w/the tech, 'face to face'. The tech told me that even though the log showed a fault/start-fail (twice), it doesn't tell him exactly what the cause was. He also asked me where did I have my phone at the time of the no start.

I told him that I usually put it in the cup holder; right in front of the temperature control dials. I asked him if that might be the cause and he said "it could be"! Then it occurred to me that "mkp81" asked me the very same thing in his post...
Was your smart key in the same pocket as your "smart" phone? I've noticed my smart key not working when it was laying against my iPhone in my pocket.
(Thanks mkp, for your great insight and intuition).

Since the prognosis was 'inconclusive', I told the service attendant that I wouldn't bring the truck back the next day (as he requested); this has happened only twice in two years, not a great average in hope of it happening again on Tuesday. I told him that if and when it happened again, it would be back "on the hook" (flat bed). This would give the tech a much better opportunity to 'catch it in the act' and find out exactly what's going on.

Thanks to all who have replied to this thread! And special thanks to 'sandcrawler', who let me know that I was still in warranty and to take it in! I'll be sure to report back if anything further happens with this.

rigtec, best to you!

I don't know if this is relevant to the Toyota "push-start" system, however I had a similar issue with a 2011 Hyundai where the engine would not respond to the push start button, however you could cycle through the battery powered options as you described. The end result on that was a faulty brake switch, might be something to look into if it continues or gets worse. The brake itself (braking, brake lights, etc) were worked fine, however the switch or signal to the engine to crank was what was broken. Mine started out very intermittent, however eventually got to a point where I was basically stranded. Quick fix however, if it happens to be the issue, at least in my case.

Again I am not certain if the Toyota's use the same or similar function, however might be something to look into.

Apologies if this was already ruled out above...Did it do the same thing as what happens if you push the start button without your foot on the brake? I wonder if it could be the brake pedal sensor? Or the sensor from the tranny? It has to think its in park to start.

Hi Madiusmax'

Thank you for offering that as a possible cause. If/when it happens again, I'll certainly consider that something to be checked; especially if I'm stranded out in who knows wheresville Lol!!

Yes it did(!), it was just like that but with the exception of the mode indicator light on the start button. As you know, if you do not press the brake pedal and push the start button, the LED glows amber (on/accessories). But, if you do step on the brake before engaging the start button, the LED turns green (IGN/run). In my case the indicator LED turned green and flashed constantly (like once every second)... never seen it do that before. Thanks for that reply... that's a very good point!
