Opinion on my planned lift and tires please

Ok, guys. I've been wanting to do this for a long time and have narrowed down what I think I want. Poke holes in this plan as you see fit. The 4Runner is an '05 V8 Full-time 4wd bone stock.

First I was planning to ditch the X-REAS and go with an OME lift. I am planning to swap the wheels out for the TRD/BBS 18x9 wheels so I can avoid running spidertrax. For tires I think I'm being screwed size-wise by the spare tire space constraints. I'd like to run 285-65-18 like user "ofcbarbrady" but no chance a full size spare is fitting there. A step down from that would be 275-65-18 which user "promed" seemed to have fit in his spare location so decided to check if I could pull that off. Online tire calculators say a 275-65-18 is 1.5 inches taller than the stock 265-65-17. I measured under my truck and the spare is already against the hitch and the only space left is 1 & 3/8 of an inch between the panhard rod and the spare so I can't run 275-65-18s. After messing around with sizes it looks to me like a 285-60-18 is my best bet. It's just under one inch taller than stock and *should* fit under the truck as well since I can't run around without a full size spare running full time 4wd.

Anyway that's how I've reasoned it out OME lift, BBS/TRD 18x9 wheels with 285-60-18 tires. Questions are does the panhard rod only move vertically so I'm good on fitting the spare? Is less that half an inch of clearance to the panhard rod sufficient? Is this wheel and tire combo gonna require new UCAs?

Please confirm or deny my suspicions. I've dreamed of new bumpers with a tire carrier, but that's just not gonna happen for a long time I think so what say you?

Not sure on tire size since I'm on 17's. I figured I would chime in on the lift though. I just put ome on mine and love it. You can't go wrong with it. Performs well off road too. Here's a pic:

Well the OME lift is solid but not as groovy as coil overs, such as Toytec or Icon....if you are considering bumpers down the road, you might want to consider coil overs now. Reason being you will have a diff set of shocks for no aftermarket bumper and for when you get aftermarket bumpers..

Can't go wrong with OME for rears..

Keep in mind that wider wheels will result in larger tires not being as large, as you might want for off road.

You might consider a wheel that is 7 or 8 inches wide, so that the size of tires will still give the clearance you are looking for...

Just some food for thought...looking forward to your build!

p.s. Man that washers to write after on the iPad after a few post yard work beers.....:lmao:

I can appreciate your battle with the ipad keyboard. No way I would have attempted to type all that on one!

Also appreciate your advice. I ordered the wheels about 20 minutes ago so now I just have to get the suspension. Decisions, Decisions...

P.S. Your truck looks great in your sig!

What tires are available in 285/60/18?

Not as many choices with an 18" wheel but Cooper Zeon LTZ's, Nitto's and a few more listed here on tirerack. Mostly street tires but a few are all terrains.

These are the Coopers I used to have mounted on the truck. Excellent tires both on and off the highway.

I like those Cooper Zeon LTZ tires alot. Not very many sizes are available on them. I first saw them when Chevy had them on the Colorado pickup concept in March of this year.

I'm running 275/65/18 Goodyear duratracs and my spare fit just fine. It's VERY tight but it fits without touching anything

That is good to know. I think I will have to try test fitting a spare up in the spare area 1st before I commit to getting the other 4 put on.

Just to give an update. I cancelled the wheel order after I placed it and went ahead with the OME kit. I got 885/895 springs with it.

No spacers (spidertraxx) or new wheels so the stance looks bad, but man is it a lot stiffer than the leaking xreas shocks that were on there. I suspect I will get used to it though.

Over the last few weeks I've finally gotten it to where I want it. Of course there is a few more things I'd like to do to it.

I'm running the OME lift, TRD Wheels, Michelin LTX AT2 in LT275/65-18 and DeMello Bolt on Sliders.

what was your mileage when the xreas started leaking and how were you able to tell. on one hand I love how my 08 urban runner rides but on the other hand I can't wait to swap out the suspension for something that can really be lifted.

Looks great! How do you like the ride compared to XREAS? I'm actually about to rip mine out as well to run the Bilstein 5100/OME combo.

Also, how much lift did you get front and rear? I'm still a little worried about the 895s lifting the rear too much as i'd like to keep it around 2" rear lift.

Seems like I got 3 inches in the front and 2 inches in the back. The ride is very stiff now compared to what it was. 3 of the 4 x-reas were leaking when I bought it so it was probably softer than it should have been. I thought the ride before was comparable to a Crown Victoria as it would soak up almost any road imperfection. Now it's tight and not too dissimilar to my wife's IS350, but I prefer a sporty ride over a mushy one.
