Hello all. I'm back in the hunt to replace my 2006 4Runner V8 and have found 2 that I like. The 5th Gen is a 2014 TE with clean Carfax and low miles and no KDSS. Tthe 4th Gen is a 2013 TE but has a sunroof and KDSS. Both in excellent condition with only a few more miles. Is the mid gen refresh worth concentrating my seaech on. Is there such a marked difference between a 2013 and 2014?
Opinions please.....5th Gen or 4th Gen?

The 2013 Trail is my favorite 4Runner. Best exterior appearance and all the function.
I looked long and hard for a used silver or gray 2013 before finally giving up buying a new 2015 Trail with KDSS.
You can't go wrong either way, but if I were picking between these two I would go with the 2013 with KDSS.

I would go with the 2013. I have a 2015 and aftermarket parts a more difficult to come by (like front bumpers and the like). I don't think the new front end is worth the extra money you're likely to pay for the 2014. Also I love my kdss. It's a little. Noisy at times but I live down an unpaved road and I can't imagine not having it.

Can't go wrong either way. You didn't mention colors or I missed it. Seems like the 13 has more options. That coupled with the insurance might be lower or the registration it may be a bit cheaper all around. Also haggle room on the older vehicle? It took me until I bought my 16 to dig the new front end. I now enjoy driving a large mouth bass. Of course, I like that it doesn't look like much of anything else on the road.

They are obviously all 5th gens. No difference mechanically at all. Only difference is minor trim stuff and hedlights. There was a minor mechanical tweak in 2013 where they added an emissions air pump or something like that to get the cats to light up faster.
I do think the 2010-2013 trails bumper covers were significantly better in terms of materials for actual offroad use. I've seen them take some actual abuse and come out still looking decent. This won't matter if you don't plan to do hard core offroad or plan to go aftermarket bumpers...
KDSS is pretty nice if you don't plan to ever go crazy with the truck or keep it forever.. It can become a liability if you plan to keep it for 150k+...

If the price difference is very small then I would get the newer 2014 model (i.e., low beam halogen lenses). I was going to recommend 2013 based on easier spark plug DIY job but I think that job got more tedious starting with 2013+ models. IMO- I like the 2010-2013 version better than 2014+; just looks classier and not so macho/angry.
x2 for the 2013 Trail. That's the one I miss the most.
I traded my 4Runner for a v6 Outback. Nothing wrong with the Sube. I miss the extra room, tow capacity, and a few other things that I need back. The 2014 TE is black w/o KDSS. 2013 has sunroof, sliding tray, and has KDSS. But man are thses dealers asking large $$ for these things, CPO or not.

That's why I ended up buying new. I was set on a used Trail, but couldn't find one for a reasonable price within 500 miles of me. I ended up buying a new SR5, and haven't regretted that decision a bit. The Trail has all the off-road gadgets, but I don't really see myself ever needing them. The appeal to me was appearance based.
