I ordered my TEP early Feb and picked it up last thursday. When it came in, the dealer offered me a Pro if I wanted it. Something isnt right.

I picked up my TRDP 4Runner in a seemingly super competitive market. So my notes below may not reflect many other peoples experience here. Simply sharing what I learned. Mostly from bullshit dealers playing games, and smarter dealers who were up front about everything. So take all this with a grain of salt.

1st. From what I understand Toyota (factory) will not take orders on the TRDPs. Not even for those super special dealers who say they get super special treatment. TRDPs are distributed (Toyota’s choice) via monthly allocations... Dealers simply get what they get. Some get more than others based on the specific’s dealership’s performance in the region. Simply put, they have no idea when they will get a TRDP. Not until they get one in allocation. No guarantees if/when. No orders.

2nd. I found the best way to “order” a TRDP was to secure an already awarded allocation, that had yet to be reserved, with a deposit at the dealership w/ the allocation. If you find one, ask the dealer for verification on the allocation, or inbound vehicle, so you can move forward on it. They should pull you paperwork/details on the actual vehicle. Even then, be careful... I had one dealer in WA product false paperwork to pull a deposit. I was lucky enough to befriend another dealer that pulled regional allocations/inbound/inventory for me. This made it easy to verify who had what. Also made it easy to avoid the bullshitters looking to take me off the market (see point 3.)

3rd. Most dealers will say/do anything to get you to place a deposit. They’ll call it whatever you want to hear… an “order" or an “allocation" or an “inbound” whatever... You should absolutly expect legit verification, on an actual vehicle, if you are giving them a deposit on anything. If they are bullshitting you, your deposit essentially takes you off the market while they attempt to find you what you want. They will then try to secure you a TRDP by 1. Putting you on their own allocation wait list, for something they have no guarantee of receiving (total gamble). or 2. by trying to secure a dealer trade (another gamble). or 3. Possibly redirecting you into something else (off the lot) after waiting forever for nothing (with persuasion of course.) Once they have your money, they kind of have you sitting. It is their game at that point.

As for me. I ended up buying outside of my region where it wasn’t so competitive. The dealer who sold mine basically tossed in drop shipping for no extra cost. Made it easy for me. All of this took about 2 months. And in hindsight, I probably should have redirected into something else (off the lot). Lol.

While I did not purchase a Pro, I must have really lucked out, purchased my 2015 TP in August when they were hard to find, especially a TP in Louisiana. Everything here is either a SR5 or Limited and in 2WD.

They found my truck as it hit the port, high jacked it and redirected to the dealership, took 5 days, but I got it.

I got it at dealer invoice, maybcould have done better, but I was happy.

This appears to be how it works: Dealers get allocations at least once a month. Therefore, Dealers get VIN at least once a month. That is the time they know of their allocations. They do not know what they are getting until they get their allocation. You have not ordered anything until you have a VIN. If you do not have a VIN, they have not allocated their allocation to you because they do not have an allocation to them of the vehicle you have ordered. Ask for a VIN.

Trdpro 2

Crestmont Toyota near me in north jersey, Has two sitting on their lot . one white and one tan.

Toyota is so different than Jeep...

I ordered a Jeep a couple of years ago with no problems at all. I'm getting ready to "order" a TRD Pro so this thread is informative. (BTW, the dealer I've been working with is chomping at the bit to order mine but hasn't asked me for a dime.)

Congrats on placing your order. Hope it comes sooner than later. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and dealers here are selling TRDP's for anywhere from $44k-$48k. I had a print out from USAA/True Car for preferred pricing and no one will deal. Within a 100 mile radius there are a dozen TRDP's available but lowest price is $44k... Ended up outing a deposit on a TE which should be here next week.

Any recommendations on what regions I could find a TRDP for say.... $39.4k?

Freeman Toyota is the only Bay Area dealership I've seen that isn't marking UP from MSRP. Unfortunately for me they don't have an allocation for a mag grey vehicle currently so I'm in a holding pattern until they do.

I'd say you are a prime candidate to use an independent auto broker. I don't know if one can get you under 40k, but they can work with a much broader inventory base for you. Also, like I said above, my broker basically made it so the drop ship was free. But I didn't pay under 40k! And I was also able to avoid sales tax... even though I purchased way out of state (OR has no sales tax.) Brokers IMO can be a really good thing if you want something super specific.

Toyota Marin also does not mark up their cars but also have no TRD Pro's available. You can pickup a silver Trail Premium from them right now (worked with Tyler T., very helpful). Burlingame Toyota is asking for a straight $4k markup on their incoming one. SF Toyota wants $4k in required add-ons. I'm leaning towards a SR5P and adding some TRD parts. But if one suddenly comes available I might just jump on it. I've killed so much time looking at 4Runners. It's been fun though.

I understand early allocations (already awarded to a specific dealer) may not have the vin assigned until the status of the allocation is coded at assembly (not sure if this is entering assembly or leaving.) I also understood it is still possible to verify the dealer in fact has the allocation before the vin is assigned (vehicle is in/out of production.)

Just picked up my TEP. Wasn't sure TEP or pro at first. Then decided on TEP without KDSS. Slim pickings in my region and my local dealer even sent me the allocation sheet for March. Ended up picking up mine a state over.

Per allocation sheet. 13 magnetic gray TEP were being built for SoCal this allocation to be spread across 76 dealers.
