Ordering brand new Limited without sunroof/moonroof?

So it's that time again, I'm kicking around the idea of getting a brand new 4runner. I really like the Limited, has all the features of my current Limited plus a lot more (gotta love those cooled seats for the sunny SW). In any case, I H-A-T-E sunroofs with a passion, every single car I've owned with a sunroof has had some kind of issue relating to the roof (current 4th gen included).

I was looking around at the dealers in the area and none were even willing to entertain the idea of a custom order, they all wanted to sell me what was sitting on the lot immediately and that was that, so I walked. The damn salespeople act as if closing the moonroof sun shade solves all the problems, but they always seem to leak, rattle, creak, or get stuck on me at some point and I'd rather not have to deal with them at all, plus I'm 6'4" so the added headroom is a perk as well.

Has anyone here ordered a 5th gen Limited without the sunroof?

Pretty sure Toyota does not build the LE without a SR.

That comes standard at least for gulf states region .... Are you trying to get the limited sound ?

The sliding moonroof is standard on the LE regardless of where you are.

No sunroof in SoCal ? Yikes. Every vehicle I've owned with moonroof/sunroof has never had an issue. Only driving since mid 1990's though. I figured you lived back east with heavy weather that might cause issues but then noticed SoCal

I purposefully bought a 4runner without leather and heated seats b/c I couldn't w/out buying a sunroof. I think it is stupid to not make a sun roof a stand alone option on each level since it is an option at every level.

I'll add leather and heated seats aftermarket to what I bought.

The issue is some talls in the passenger seat (with no option for vertical translation) don't have enough clearance with the sunroof.

Toyota doesn't make it with out a sunroof unfortunately why do you want a limited trim level ?

Meh bullshit. I am 6'3" and test drove an LE and probably still had a good 2" of headroom if not a bit more.

People griping about the vehicles - either buy them or don't. Test drive first. You don't like it, go buy something else.

Skip the LE and get a Trail Edition. I live in SD. I had sunroof/ moonroof in the past 3 vehicles (over 12 years). Never used it as I always burned my head. I went with the TE basic... no moonroof, no leather, no frills.... After a year of driving it.... Absolutely no regrets.... I have a bad ass stance and a truck that is not a grocery getter. It turns heads and get compliments. Way more than my 2013 Inifiniti JX35, fully loaded with every option... yes that is the wife's grocery getter.

Save the money and put it towards a good lift, wheels, tires, rack ,etc. Then enjoy what these are capable of doing. JMHO...

I am 6'-4" as well and have never had an issue with headroom in either the driver or passenger side seats. This is with the sun roof shade open and closed.

Quite a few 4R owners have reported a rattle with their sunroofs when the glass is tilted open. I don't recall if there ever was a permanent fix. I have the annoying rattle.

Still, I wouldn't forgo the sunroof for anything; it's bigger than most and not as prone to the wind noise plaguing most other SUVs - maybe because the front glass is so vertical, deflecting some wind.

Bullshit because since you didn't have any issue, thus nobody should have any issue? Not everyone agrees.

Every product is an assortment or design tradeoffs and compromises. Nothing is perfect, even if it is the best overall choice. Complaining about certain shortcomings are valid, it's just the nature of things.

The whole "If you don't like it, get out!" mantra is counterproductive and simplistic.

Thanks everyone, I'll be kicking it around for a while. The roof is one thing I don't like about my 4th gen, but I do admit the headroom in the 5th gen is quite a bit better, whereas the 4th gen is just barely enough if I slightly slouch. I always round my height down a bit, but really I'm probably closer to 6'5", but my biggest reason for not wanting a roof wasn't necessarily headroom.

In any case, all the roof problems I had (even my Lexus and 4th gen) were when in Seattle, that damn place's "winter" will find its way through any kind of weather seal in existence. It just rains, and rains, and rains and never dries out, so I guess when things are constantly wet they're subject to more issues.

I just don't see the point in complaining about something that doesn't exist.

I wanted a TE with a sunroof but did not want Softex. Can't happen.

So I had two choices. Live with the Softex and get a TEP or live without the sunroof and get a TE.

I understand why Toyota and most manufacturers do what they do. They have all sorts of studies and customer opinion polls and sales sheets and they say 95% of the people that buy an SR5 want this. 90% of the people buying a Trail want this, the other 10% want that. Same with the LE.

So... Either Toyota feels the majority of buyers of an LE want a sunroof OR they consider a sunroof a "premium" addition and worthy of being standard on all LE's.

Either way, you want an LE you will get a sunroof. Period. Good, bad or indifferent. I personally feel 95% of the people on earth feel a sunroof is a great option.
