Outer CV Dust Shield

I tried searching, but couldn't find an definite answers, so here we go. I just recently replaced the cv's on my mom's 03 with a set of reman Autozone cv's. The 4runner isn't lifted or modified at all so he just wanted to replace them and be done (no rebooting). When I installed them I noticed there weren't any dust shields so I swapped the inner dust shield (diff side), but couldn't figure out how to get the outer dust shield off. Because we were running out of day I installed them without the outer dust shield and didn't think twice. Now I'm wondering if I was supposed to some how remove and reinstall the dust shield onto the new CV. He already returned the OEM cv's for his core, so if I do need them, any idea where to get a set from?

The CV's looked just like the ones in the picture, with a inner shield, but no outer.

Yes. You're supposed to take the shield from the old shaft and move it to the new. It keeps crap out of your bearings. You can't really buy them by themselves either.
