That's funny, and probably a little embarassing at the same time lol. The gearshift is like lower than the 101 class! Im not old but Im not young, and every Auto vehicle I've ever driven or seen since I knew much about vehicles, the "D" in the quadrant is what you shift to for most all driving. You only use the manual downshift if you are towing, or want to already be in a lower gear and have the RPM's up in anticipation of passing someone on a 2 lane road or getting ready to race lol. But otherwise just let the engineers design do it's job and just put it in Drive.
I personally just leave mine in D as the Automatic Transmission, with all it's sensors, are feeding into the ECM data along with the engine's parameters, to determine the appropriate gear for you. Hence the name, Automatic, does it all on it's own, you just have to mash the loud pedal down. Though in traffic around town, I have been known to leave it in 4th so that it does not hit OD, keeps the revs up a bit, and power at the ready in case some dipshit wants to try and run up and cut me off, I can close the hole up quickly and watch him writhe in anguish and flip me the bird. My Ram, well, anything under 50 and I keep the OD off. Mine only has 4 gears, you choose from 1,2,D, and the OD is not a position on the shifter but rather an electronic switch. So instead of shifting out of OD like in the 4Runner, you press a button that says OD OFF and you're in 3rd or "D" on the quadrant. Press the button again, and it shifts into 4th which is also "D" on the quarant.
