Overheating Problem?

Have a '88 4runner that randomly overheated I think while driving it the other day. Typical steam started coming out ront left of the hood and when I pulled over and popped the hood the coolant was all over the inside, mostly down towards the front driver's side wheel well. In looking for a leak however I couldn't find one but the coolant was drained. From the spraying it looked to be a tiny hole as it spray all over the place. The car started back up no problem but I didn't drive it and opted for the tow home. Any suggestions? Much appreciated.

Clogged cooling system, bad thermostate, bad water pump. Probably would start with the t-stat.

Flush and fill, then go to a shop for a cooling system pressure test if you don't have the tools. And I agree with 97-4xFunner, just ditch that thermostat and replace with an OEM or other reliable Tstat.

what did this post make you go look at your radiator to help suggest problems, now thats going the extra mile!

Do check your radiator. I had several pin hole leaks in mine. (which I discovered after I blew the headgasket) Apparently it's common in the 4runners.

Just had the 3 core all brass/copper radiator on the '91 boiled/wroughted out, totally cleaned and and painted for $70.00. My guy said it's a saver and should be good for at least another four years (with proper maintenance and fluids, of course)........

it honestly might not sound like much, but if you got a leak in your radiator then, buy the bars stop leak at autozone. That **** works amazing.

You're correct, it is amazing stuff. But no one I know ever uses it unless it's either a dire emergency, or the vehicle is being sold within the next two weeks. Something about putting solids in a system designed for fluid and all.........

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions, I guess I'll begin with the thermostat and work from there, hopefully it's not the radiator but the way the coolant sprayed out a pin hole leak sounds like it might be a logical guess. But I really appreciate everyone's recommendations.

even if it is the radiator its not such a big deal they only cost 100 bucks and anyone can pull it out and put it in.
