Overheating

My 93 4runner is overheating. I just put coolant in and the reservoir was full when I got to work but it had overheated on the way. Now the reservoir is empty and it's still pushing the gauge. How do I figure out what's wrong? Do I need to take it in to someone? How much will it cost to fix? *real question of doom*

If you do not know how to look in the engine and search for leaks, then yes, take it to a professional.

Depending on where and If there is a leak, it might be fixed pretty cheap. Worst case scenario is a blown head gasket which could cost $500-$1000 minimum.

And PLEASE dont put any "stop leak" stuff in it. That stuff is a nightmare to clean out wile in the middle of a rebuild.

Well, would I need to flush the cooling system, because I can do that, I just have never tried it. It's not too difficult of a concept. I just need to know the first few things I can do to see the problem.

#1-Open your hood.

#2-Run engine to normal operating temperature.

#3-Observe for leaks

#4-Observe color of exhaust.

#5-Report back on your observations.

What FoG said. Check every coolant and heater hose for crusty dried on coolant, that's a sign of a leak. Also check under your oil cap for white goo, that's a sign that coolant is getting into your oil.

No goo on oil cap but there is a leak right under the front axel on the passenger's side of the car. It's leaking a red color, though, and we use green coolant. The inside of the reservoir is crusty brown though, so it could just be oily or something.
