Overseas Assignment

Found out my next assignment will be in Germany. If anyone can help clarify that my 10' T4R TE is up to German road specs(if any) that'd be a big load off.

German roads are infinitely better than here (although crappier city traffic). Your main annoyance with the 4Runner will be size (tight, busy streets) and the price of filling it up. Be happy if you don't have to pay road tax on it.

Beyond that... Go enjoy it in the Alps while you are there!

SUVs are becoming pretty popular over there as are Toyotas so you should be gtg.

Tip if you have never been there: Ausfahrt is NOT a city in Germany.
 
Check out your gaining base's website, it'll have the requirements for the paperwork and any modifications you might need to get done prior to licensing. There are some small fees I found for Spangdahlem but they were all under $50. The only mods I found were to the signals, aka directionals, and the driver side rear brake light. The signals need to be visible for 180 degrees and the brake light has an additional bulb that is used during foggy weather in place of those idiots who drive around with their hazards on in fog. I saw a TE over there on my last visit, mine is staying here. The gas is no problem, on base gas is the same as the states, off base is uber pricey. Parking garages and parking in general are going to be a pain. I would NOT bring a roof rack, the garages are very compact. Good luck and enjoy, where are you headed?
 
I'm stationed in Belgium and my dad works on Spangdahlem in Germany. We both have our 4Runners over here. My dad has his totally stock 2012 Trail over there and it didn't need anything to be legal in Germany. I'll get in touch with my dad and find out if a 2010 would need anything special (in belgium, anything older than 4yrs would be subject to annual inspections and you have to have a rear fog light to pass).

EDIT: My dad just e-mailed me back. I'll paste it below.

"No special requirements like in England. It will have to get inspected and
pass a normal safety inspection; tires, no oil leak in shocks, no broken
glass, NO oil or fluid leaks on the engine transmission or drive train. They
will also check ball joints and tie rod ends."

Nothing like going 120mph on the autobahn and then having some half-drunk eastern european thug (perhaps one of my uncles) cut in front of you at 20mph in a Trabant.

Can't say that that ever happened to me in the 6yrs I was there. With a Trabant that is.

I was driving to work one morning (around 5:45am) and some one in a white panel van was flipping out blocking 3 lanes of traffic from passing him. I worked my way up to the front of the line in my GTO (I was the first one in all of Germany with the new at the time 2004 GTO) and I proceeded to fake him out going left and swung around to the right on him. Was fun to see him flipping out even harder after I got around him.
 
I think 4Runner is not the most practical daily driver for Germany. Gas prices are high, road are narrower and you can't drive 4Runners at 120 mph : )

Instead find out what is hot over there from the states. Buy it here, sell it there, grab something that's easy to get there and hard to get here and sell again when you get back, 2 of my friends did this and made bank with the free shipping courtesy of Uncle Sam.
