Oversized Tires

I have a 1997 Limited 2wd and I want to purchase new tires. I have a 1 inch lift on it and the tires I have now (255 70R 16s) are a bit small for the opening. Specs call for (265 70R16s)... However, my question is -- What's the next size BIGGER I can go and still have a smooth ride and no rubbing? Maybe even the next size up. I do mostly street driving so M&S works best.
Thanks for any 411... and possible the best place to purchase. Just a bit excited to beef it up a bit.
