Overthinking and Confusing Lift Options

I beleive he is talking about the Tundra 5100's.

The Bilstein Tundra 5100's are designed to level the Tundra if set at NO lift (or the lowest perch, as said above) Therefore you should expect about 2" of lift, maybe a hair more when the Tundra 5100's and TRD coils are installed on the 4Runner. Then ad .65" of lift for every notch or perch that you move the retainer up. (5 in total)

I just pulled the trigger on the Tundra setup 2 weeks ago, now waiting to get it installed. I am looking for more lift than you, but they are supposed to ride AMAZINGLY. I am also replacing my OME lift because I think it is toooo stiff and the valving doesnt match the weight of my T4R.

I'd love to find some Tundra springs but I just bought tacoma/4runner 5100s and not sure they will work together.

To econhonda: I would go with the toytec coilovers up front and LC springs for the rear. Or maybe Tundras up front if you can find them.

Thanks for the tips guys. I will be looking into the Tundra coils and the Allpro coilover. If anyone sees anything around and thinks of me in the next couple days, let me know. Thanks!

Ok, so I've been overthinking things a bit more.

From what I've briefly read about Tundra Access Cab TRD 4X4 front coils, they are about a 500lbs spring rate. My OME 881's are 502# spring rate. They are roughly the same length. Is there any reason why I wouldn't get a very similar ride just keeping my 881's and pairing them with Bilstein 5100's for the Tundra? Am I missing something? Why am I still nervous to do this?

The Tundra spring is progressive so its ride is different than a spring with a even 500# rate. I actually have read the Tundra coils full rate is closer to 600#.

Oh, that's right. So a progressive 600# coil rides softer or firmer than a regular 600# coil? It's softer, right? At least for a portion of it's travel? I am really considering going with the tundra billies on my 881's. Somebody tell me why I shouldn't other than "OME should stick with OME".

I would just go Tacoma/4runner 5100's with your 881's if you go that route. People get the Tundra 5100's because they are paired properly with Tundra coils. I'm sure you could go with the Tundra 5100's though and if you change your mind at some point get Tundra coils as well.

These are the Units I bought from Nordstrom Automotive off E-bay. They come off a 2000 Tundra TRD Access Cab. I paid $160.00 for the pair, plus $140.00 for shipping, and another $25.00 or so for the Customs fees. (Shipping from the US to Canada = MURDER! So total after all was said and done: $325.00.[/QUOTE]

I don't know anything about spring rates and whatnot....but this is my setup, + The toytec Top plate spacer. It rides pretty smooth, but my shocks are now getting a little tired. The truck they came off has about 80 000 miles on it.......

Hope this helps......

Good point. I've read really mixed things about using the taco billies with 881's. A bunch of taco drivers do it and say it works fine, but some say it is not valved correctly.

Well I guess it turns out it's a good thing I haven't been able to put my lift on yet as I have the exact same setup. As much as I hate to say it, it sounds like tundra struts/lc coil setup is the way to go as far as comfort.

From what I've read Toytec pairs their 600+ lb Eibach springs with Tacoma/4runner 5100 bilsteins and they seem to be a great setup. So my question is, why wouldn't these same bilsteins work well with Tundra coils that have roughly a 600# spring rate?

Haha. Just stumbled onto this thread and saw this. I just got that 4runner and really want to lift it. I too am having a hard time deciding what to use and do. Because I have two sets or more in our yard Im going to try them out. After I get out of class I will check the markings on the springs. Should be yellow, yellow blue right? What do I need to look for on the shocks? Id be happy to ship a set or two if we have them. We are also linked up to many salvage yards on the east coast so if I dont have enough, I can always get more.

The shocks should have the HD bilsteins and be yellow and blue as well. Those are the shocks described above as possibly riding harsh. One spring will be double yellow and the other will be yellow/blue.

Forgot there was a photo on this page but the one above posted by fightman80 is exactly what you should see.

Pretty sure thats what we have. So if these ride harsh, what would be my other shock option? Also, If I run these springs what else do I actually need? spacers, trim packers?

I'm trying to find out for sure if my tacoma/4runner 5100 bilsteins will work but it seems the Tundra 5100s work well with these.

From what I understand you'll get 2-2.5" lift by switching out stock springs with these Tundras. If you want up to 3" then you'll need a spacer for sure.

Crap, I did forget one other thing...Not sure but you may have to use the Tundras top plate. Can someone confirm that part?

Wow, that's pricey! I paid about $450 shipped for NEW TRD Tundra coils and new Tundra Bilstein 5125's. You got nailed on the shipping!

If you use the Tundra 5100's you dont need a spacer. You just adjust the bottom perch up for more lift when you assemble them, and I believe the 4Runner/Tacoma 5100's are the same but with less adjustment perches. (3 instead of 5 on the Tundra 5100s) You use 4Runner top plates with the Tundra springs. BUT you need to use the Tundra coil spring isolator, a part that holds the spring in place in the correct orientation under the 4Runner tap plate.

Thanks for that info. I'm just wanting between 2-2.5" lift...closer to 2 which I think was the size the OP was looking for also. I hope my Tacoma 5100s will provide the same lift with these coils set at the bottom perch.

The Tundra TRD coils are ~595# spring rate. Usually ToyTec packages their COs with 600# coils. The coils used on the ToyTec/Eibach COs are taller than the stock and/or TRD coils. I already thought about this and measured before I went with the Eibach coils.

You don't need to use Tundra top plates. I used my stock top plates when I had TRDs.

Warning, Tundra shocks are valved stiffer and will ride harder.

On my 2000 (each year had different factory ride heights so lifts will yield different heights), the TRDs gave me ~2" of lift.

A little back story to my lifts.
Are we ever happy with our lift? doubtful
Do we want more lift? always

My first "lift" was a set of airlift bags in back. They were great but I realized that I wanted to lift the whole vehicle and not just get rid of the tail sag. I returned them after 2 weeks. Stock coils (~150#). I also replaced my shocks with "M" brand shocks, worst decision. Two weeks later I replaced those with a set of HD Bilsteins. Great shocks!

2nd lift. Tundra TRD coils (~595#) in front, OME 890 (190#) in back. Great ride and nice amount of lift.

3rd. Replaced the 890 (190#) with 891 (210#) for a little more lift with added weight.

4th. Added a ToyTec topout spacer in front and 10mm trim packers in back.

5th. swapped out the TRD coils for ToyTec coilover setup. (600#)

6th. I just bought a pair of 9.25 wrap LC coils (160#) for the rear. I'm hoping that they compress to give me ~4.5" then I can bring up my COs if needed. They gave me ~ 4.5" of lift with my normal load.

7th. I will be swapping the 9.25 wrap LCs out for OME 861 (220#) soon. The LCs ride/flex great but compress too much with all of my wheeling/camping/ ExPo gear in it. TBD

**As I have gone along I have replaced shocks to increase travel but only use Bilsteins!**

***If I was to start over I would start with Coilovers in front. Even if I only wanted a couple of inches. This way I could dial in the exact height/rake I wanted for the rear coils of choice. ***

I run the tundra trd coils in front with the OME 906 coils in back paired with the stock 4runner rear shocks and it rides like a a cadlillac. gave me a nice even 2 inch lift on all 4 corners.
