P0012 Code???

Where do I start? My son's 05 Runner with 211,xxx miles and a V6. What should I start looking for.

It's on bank 1 (passenger side), and not the P0016 that seems to be associated with stretched timing chains like mine based on my reading thus far. This is likely good news.

It seems possible the Oil Control Valve (OCV) may be stuck partially open on the retard-timing circuit. Easy part to remove, just remove the air filter housing from the throttle body to the ducting and you're looking right at it under the throttle body.

Most of the diagnostic procedure requires a TIS tool not commonly available, but they can be bought on eBay it seems. I'd start with removing the OCV from the passenger side bank, examining it against pictures found in this thread: P0016 timing chain stretch skip pix and solve - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum

Pay close attention to the position of the multi-valve assembly versus the housing...if the valves aren't in their closed positions as shown, there's your problem.

If no findings there, it's time to remove the passenger side valve cover and bring the #1 piston to top dead center (TDC) and verify both cams are on their zero marks.
