P0136 code on 1997

Hey Guys,

I have searched the forums and have found some helpful info regarding this code but I wanted to check to see if the other codes on the reader mean anything.

This what the screen read when Advance Auto Parts hooked up their reader:

P0136
Oxygen Sensor
Circuit Bank 1
Sensor 2 (See
P2270, P2271)
Confirmed

So I believe this is the second sensor but I have not been able to find a pic or a diagram where that might be. Im pretty handy and can follow instructions so I should be able to figure this out.

As always any help and suggestions are appreciated.

If it's the second sensor, follow the exhaust pipe past the catalytic conveter but before the muffler. You'll see a sensor that's attached to the top of the exhaust pipe, that's the one in question.

Check for any sort of damage or if the sensor is loose. If not, then replace the sensor. Should only cost around $40-$50. DENSO only!
 
I'm bringing back this old thread. Just got a CEL today, using my ODB reader I found that the code is P0136, Sensor Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 2. I drive a 2000 V6 4Runner.

I looked at many threads here, and it's a little all over the place. Good info here and there, but bottom line: what should I do?

Should I replace the 02 Sensor, or is it also the wiring harness that needs to be changed? I'm no mechanic btw. Not at all.

Get under the truck, and do a visual check on the wiring running to that sensor - if it looks good, you can unplug the sensor, plug it back in, disconnect the negative terminal on the battery (to reset the code) and see if it returns. If so, it is a good bet that it is the sensor although best practice is to verify harness is good using a multimeter. But, just had this same code on my 2000 T4R and it was, indeed, the sensor. I have the Federal emissions version and replaced both O2 sensors. Did the front one because it has never been done (245,000 miles) although no codes or performance issues, it looked a little "lazy". Hoping that it will improve gas mileage (TBD). I agree with the previous poster that said Denso only - paid about $50 each on Amazon. Rockauto is also a good choice. Pay attention to part numbers....lots of different choices.

I had one of the two sensors replaced, I'll need to double check which one. Thanks for your answer, it's getting dark here so I'll do it tomorrow morning.

The Fed emission version is the non CA version basically, right? That's what I have if I'm not mistaken, any chance you could share the parts numbers with me please? If you don't have them handy don't bother, that will be fine :)
 
Thanks man! I did just change the front sensor a couple months back, I checked, so I guess I'll just have the rear one to change.
 
The P0136 is for the rear sensor so that makes sense. FYI...the rear sensor doesn't really control anything - it just monitors CAT efficiency. So, running a bad rear O2 sensor will likely light the CEL (which is important if you need to pass emissions testing) but will not hurt performance, emissions or gas mileage. I just replaced mine because I don't like to run with the CEL on all the time.
