P0171 - I've Had Enough Of Your Crap Thread!!!

Ever since I bought my 3rd gen stock with a supercharger, the P0171 code has been pissing me off! I first tried to replace the O2 sensor after the cat with an NGK, should have stuck with DENSO after some reading around here. Check engine light came back after a day of driving, tried cleaning the MAF with MAF cleaner...went away for about 5 days. Also replaced the Pre-Cat O2 sensor with a DENSO and no luck. I've reset the ECU, I've tried to clear the code with a scanner and no luck. I did find a huge hole on my aftermarket intake which was not there when I installed it. Now next week I plan on replacing the following:

- new intake
- OEM DENSO MAF sensor
- IK22 Spark Plugs
- DENSO O2 Sensor to replace that stupid NGK sensor.

Up in the air about replacing the PCV valve as well, what do you guys think? I was also worried that if the above doesn't work...what's next? I don't enjoy driving it only because its a gas guzzler, its no Honda Civic I know that but it almost feels like I'm driving an 8 cylinder, I can literally see my gas gauge go down. Many hours of reading and researching around here, a stock 4Runner V6 Auto should be getting anywhere from 17mpg-19mpg and sometimes higher with a Supercharger without a heavy foot...ha! At high RPM's it tends to hesitate and choke, hoping with this small tune up....it'll be up and running as it should with great mileage. I know a URD 7th Injector is needed for best power with the supercharger but I have no pinging AT ALL! I do love this truck, and I don't want to let it go, it only has 136,000 miles on it.

I would put back the factory intake. From what I understand, the supercharger does not respond well to aftermarket intakes.

When I removed the stock intake, it had a hole in it.

Should I replace the wires for the spark plugs as well? Should I stick with OEM or NGK BLUE?

Once those listed items are taken care of.... your code should clear. That being said... if the plugs and wires haven't been done in a long time... it would be a good idea to do them. I changed mine out last winter, and found a huge difference in how it ran. Fuel consumption always sucks with mine.... I'm lifted, and running 33's during the non-winter months. :D

I bought Blue NGK wires.... they work great.... get OEM plugs though.... I found them cheaper than buying at a parts store.... and they specific to your vehicle. :D

P.S: I recently had the same code come back on mine.... cleaned the MAF and swapped back in my Fram paper filter (was running a K&N drop in), but have yet to take it on a long trip, to see if the CEL comes back on....

If you want to try my MAF / intake on it to see if that's the problem we can give it a shot.

However, i would do plugs / wires first. Also, the NGK sensor should work fine. Try cleaning the MAF again and making sure the wiring harness is in good shape. I would disconnect it and use electrical cleaner than dielectric grease on it.

Have you replaced your throttle body gasket?

What do you mean by, "New intake?"

A new aftermarket intake, new pipe and filter. Should I get the TRD "O" gasket?

Also who did you buy the truck off of if you don't mind me asking?

I bought it off of a guy in Mississauga, about 1.5 year ago....maybe even less.

Take out the NGK o2 sensor you put in and install a denso and I bet your cel will be gone .

I'm sure the NGK sensor is not helping the situation. :redbrick:

First off, just because it's not detonating does NOT mean it isn't actually running lean. Fix the air leak in the intake piping, un-metered air will surely give you lean codes, as the car can't account for the airflow. A loose gas cap/bad seal won't give you a lean code, it'll give you an evap system code, like a P0440 or something along those lines. What pulley is on the truck? How much boost are you seeing?

Just trying to figure out if it's the truck i'm thinking of... probably not...
But yea, fix the intake first. use gas to check for any more leaks. You could also get a smoke test to check for leaks...

Looks like my issue has been resolved, with just a good cleaning of my MAF.... :)

Gonna keep driving it for the next couple of days, to see if the code comes back....

As far as I know it's the stock pulley,.

These are things you need to know for sure, it's next to impossible to correctly diagnose a car when you don't even know what parts are on it. I'm not knocking you, just saying you should probably do a little research and find out exactly what parts are on your truck, it'll make future issues a lot easier to diagnose.

Bought it off an owner who had no clue about his truck. It's a stock pulley, that I know, it's completely stock other than a Supercharger.

So the follow parts have all been ordered:

- Brand New Intake Assembly
- OEM MAF Sensor
- IK22 Spark Plugs
- NGK Blue Spark Plugs
- TRD "O" Gasket
- Denso O2 Sensor

Hoping all this will make my 3rd gen run at its best.
