P0456 EVAP system error code

Hey guys,

Need a bit of help on this one, suggestions welcome.

Backstory:
Couple weeks ago my check engine light as well as the VSC and those other traction related lights came on (following an overnight snowfall), so I booked an appointment at the dealer for the following week.

The afternoon it was supposed to go to the dealer the lights went out when I started it up, so I almost didnt bring it in but they convinced me to anyways. They determined it was code P0456 which is the EVAP system and the tech said that it could have possibly been a loose gas cap or a charcoal canister leak. they said they checked everything over and didnt notice anything out of order so I took it back.

So yesterday and last night we got a bit of snow and this morning I hopped in my 4Runner and the same lights are back on, I dont have a code reader so I dont know for sure that its the same code but I am assuming it is.

Has anyone come across something like this? I know this code isnt all that important as all it is telling me is there is a vapour leak in the fuel system, it doesnt affect performance at all but I'd like to get it to stop throwing codes.

I'm going to start with buying a new gas cap, then go from there.

Also, thinking it might be time to buy a code reader, maybe scan guage?

Same thing happened to me over the weekend!! Right after the first snowfall of the year and the same code!! My shop read it and cleared it and said to tighten the gas cap but it was already tight. The next day (yesterday) the lights came back on...

I fixed this issue on my truck with a new gas cap. Scan Gauges are great, but places like AutoZone will also read your codes for free.
