Paint on Roof is fading weathered - call Toyota

2013 has no clear coat. One step painting process was used for most dark colors. You have to wax twice a year to keep original shine.

I’m pretty sure you are wrong.

Only Super White does not have clear coat.

All of the other colors are metallics and have a clear coat.

Pretty sure my '13 Salsa Red has a clear coat too. I have taken out some light scratches, no coloring on pads. I would expect to see "some" oxidized paint on the pads if it didn't have a coat of clear. The heck I know I don't paint cars, I only wash mine... every once in a while

I run mine through the local "brush" car wash often and the MGM paint still looks like new. I go through it 3-4 times a week in the winter however to get all the salt off the undercarriage. That hasn't stopped my rock sliders from rusting however

Please, Please expand on this if you have any information. This is happening on my little Acura RSX right where the spray would hit the roof a bit above my windshield. Only ever used the blue methanol stuff for spray.

Windshield washer fluid for winter use contains alcohols which will strip away most waxes. That exposes the clearcoat to the elements which could cause a problem. I'd recommend using the summer fluid when the anti-freeze properties aren't needed. Better safe that sorry.

Funny anecdote - my parents had a Suburban that had pain peeling issues. So GM repainted it. The problem was that they repainted it the wrong color combo. It was a two tone with light silver and dark gray. It came back IIRC with white over gray with a red pin stripe. I don't think they really cared enough to argue about it. They're not car enthusiasts. And those suburbans were basically disposable anyway.

I have a 2011 Salsa Red Trail that's exposed to sunshine in Phoenix and Flagstaff. It's under a carport at home and work. It gets detailed and waxed every other year at the dealer and frequent automatic washes. There is no sign of paint fading or clear coat failure at this time.

Couple years later, like [MENTION=211123]DougR[/MENTION] I have a salsa red (one owner), no issues on the roof. Mostly outside truck, occasionally under the carport, maybe two light waxes (sometimes washy/wax combo) and a yearly sealant.

I suspect some of these may have been parked under caustic trees or plants, or other similar.

Live in Hawaii and car is always outside. Clear coat is shot, ended up using optimum clear coat restorer. Essentially adds a new layer of clear coat. Optimum Clear Coat Restorer (CCR) 9oz. Includes 4 Small Gray Pearl Weave Towels

I have a 2010 Magnetic Gray Metallic and the paint is heavily faded on hood, roof, and rear spoiler. It looks like those trashy green old GMC pickups.

I've never had a car do this before of all the cars I've owned. I'd guess it is a factory problem that it didn't hold up to weather well at all. I'd hazard a guess that Toyota will never cop to the problem and won't address it or fix it.

our 16 was starting to show signs of oxidation on the roof. took about 45 minutes to cut the clear coat, polish it, and seal it. looks flawless now. you could see the shade lines from the roof rack crossbars where the sun wasnt damaging the paint lol. parked outside without any shade every day since we bought it.

Car manufacturers used to have (and maybe still do) what they call a no notice recall. It's for non safety related issues like paint problems. GM did it in the 80's for paint issues on the Grand Am and Corsica. One was for paint peeling due to bad primer and the other was for premature fading. I had a corsica that had the fading problem and found out too late to get it fixed by GM. Apparently these types of recalls have a time limit. I guess now it's something you have to ask about - or research on the Net which wasn't an option back then.

We have a 2015 4Runner that sits outside in the Las Vegas heat. All our cars are washed and waxed exactly the same and it’s the only one with paint issues. Two years ago the roof clear coat started peeling, then the hood and now the sides below the windows. We had it at the Toyota dealer for a timing cover gasket leaking, repaired under warranty. We showed it to the owner of the dealership look at it. He said he had never seen a 4Runner clear coat issue like ours and agreed Toyota should take care of it. Toyota refused to warranty the paint for two reasons.

1) It was outside the factory warranty of 36,000 miles.

2) Even thou it was only 5 years old they went by the miles on our 4Runner which was 95,000 and denied the claim.

I’ve lived in Las Vegas since I started driving and never had clear coat issues on the 15+ cars I’ve owned!
