Paint question

So guys I scored some mud flaps for free courtesy of my job and would like to replace my running boards with them but one issue I found is that the mudflaps are the smooth texture and the fender flares and rear flaps are that rough texture ....thinking that if I scuff the smooth flaps and used spray bedliner on everything ...my question is will the finished product look different as far as the smooth flaps look a bit different from the rest? Or will everything look the same ?

This is what I'm talking about ....1st pic you can clearly see the texture I was saying 2nd is the new flap smoothness and 3rd is obvious of both flaps.... thought you guys would wanna see them since they are OEM ...one is wet.. I just washed the piss out of them ..I came about these from a fellow 4runner owner who was taking them off his rig for some unknown reason ...assuming he is replacing with aftermarket ..really have no idea and wasn't about to hang around since he gave them to me for free and they are next to impossible to come across

I want to bedliner them only because I like the texture of it and I am going to do all the trim front to back for an even look was just wondering if the end result will be different with those front mudflaps being that smooth finish or will it even matter since I'm gonna use bedliner ....I also am going to be doing the rockers with the same bedliner...got some rust holes

If you are gonna paint them. Take the flares off first and clean them up and paint. masking off the vehicle is more of a pain in the arse

Thank you bump n run for responding ....coolman I am taking them off to paint .....its my daily driver so I'm not about to paint when on cuz sure as crap I'll have to run and do something the moment they are painted ....I lucked out tho everything is bolted on so Nome of those nasty clips that break and alignment shouldn't be a big problem ..plus it'll give me a chance to see where else rust has been hiding and I can clean and wax when they cover up the body I suppose I can post pictures to add to everyones that have already done this

You've got the wrong flaps. Find the correct rear flaps and use trim dye to match the color. Don't paint these.

They are not rear flaps they are front flaps and they are OEM I'll have to get the numbers off them ...only reason they are so called wrong is because they are not off a highlander edition like mine...but that doesn't matter to me at all since they are already painted and will be painting (bedlinering) the rest of my trim and valance and back bumper trim ...just want my running boards off .. And not about to leave the rockers vulnerable to gravel and other debris ....the best part is I got them for free ...sorry if it reads like im snapping I'm not ....why do you think they are wrong? Hahahahahahahahaha I'm a total jackass should have done a tad bit more research o well at least I get to see what the bedliner looks like

So update on the flaps ....since I did more research and found out they are not correct thanks to t4r2014 for pointing that out and making me sound like an idiot ....the good news is they bolt on and fit they just don't match my trim ....I'll get some pictures up as soon as I get everything painted and some rust fixed ( may take a bit) but in the end I don't think they will look bad. Won't look great eithed but at least I'll be saving some future damage ..

Yeah hurry up with them pics man, I've got those flaps on my truck and just bought the sr5 flares from a member on here and was curious to know how the base flaps(the ones you have in question) would fill in the fender flare gap.
As far as painting the flaps, I would just paint the flares and flaps at the same time for the best match. What I've used on my trim pieces and plan to use on the flares is a plastic sealer. The color comes out smooth and more of a satin black. It matches well with my painted bumpers which I used Sikkens racing black to paint. Also creates a satin black finish.

To answer your question they don't really have a gap but the flares stick out 2 inches farther than the flaps do ....the flaps ride real close to the body .....I'm still painting the flares right now...I'll have the front 2 finished by Tuesday hopefully and I'll put them back on and snap a quick pic for you to see what I'm talking about ....it doesn't look good by any means but the only reason I'm using them is just untill I can fix a few rust holes and bedliner then they will be coming off ....I can if need be in the middle of coats I can so called test fit just for you

Nah don't worry about it man, but I appreciate the reply. I'll see firsthand this weekend how the fit goes. I was afraid you were gonna say they wouldn't look good, so I'll probably get some caps from Dfarms. You should look into some too.

here is your pictures ....I had to let the paint dry ......and what exactly are you talking about that I should look into ... I'm crossing my fingers in hoping my local junkyard has the flaps I'm looking for ...I just have to get out there and see what's left on their 4runners....now in my last picture there is a rub spot that was uncovered and it went down to bare metal that has just started to rust ....how in the hell to I fix that? And the rub spots all the way around the flare too ?

That's what I was saying look up, it's a fender flare cap for your fenders. You are right about those flaps not matching, I was afraid of that.

Looked way worse until I painted them ...doesn't look bad as a temporary thing but I will def be pulling them back off after I fix that rust spotand doing my original plan .....have to put those flaps to some use since I got them for free and spent a whopping 6 bucks on paint lol

As far as the rub marks and rusted areas they'll needed to be treated with an epoxy'd and repainted to prevent any more rusting.

Product recommendations? And I thank you for your advice I now want a set of those caps lol they make the truck look even ...they match the trim in front of the back wheels almost perfectly
