Painted Rims Black...

Quick question everyone... how man cans of primer and how many cans of paint will i need for all 4 rims? about to go buy the spray paint thanks
 
I used 3 cans of black, but had to reshoot 2 of the wheels. You can probably get away with 1 can of primer depending on how many coat you go with.
 
I'm only halfway through, but it looks like: 1 can etching primer, 2 cans black sandable primer, 2 cans Graphite Color, 1 can clear coat. I might need 2 of Clear. I'm using Duplicolor. I used a lot of primer because my wheels were pretty eaten up and needed heavy duty scuffing to smooth out the peeling clear coat.

these are some of the cleanest, best looking painted wheels i've seen. and i really like the red painted emblem too. i think the flat black/low gloss look is what i'll be going for now that i've seen yours. may do the emblem red too since i've got other red trim going on around the truck as well (skid plate + F&R coils)
 
That looks awesome....really like how you painted the calipers red.....I think Im going to do that ...i painted my wheels black too on my 2003 4th generation 4runner...totally love the way it looks now....I need to hit them again though as I ran out of paint before I finished

Why feel bad- that's exactly why this site is here.. Google anything having to do with a 4runner, this site comes up in the top 3 or so pages.. Thats the amount of info thats here.. You just made it that much easier for people to find it..

I saw that stuff at walmart the other day. I wasn't curious enough to read what it did....no idea that's what aircraft remover meant :wtf:
 
Great job OP, and thanks for the description.

Whackmaster, were your wheels really beat up? I don't want to sand/buff either so will use that airplane rustoleum stuff. Thanks for that tip, and oh yeah..I like your homemade roof rack.

Wire wheel (actually I used the straight rotating wire brush, gets in there better) was great on the rough finish parts, but really scratched up the flat polished spoke faces. There I used a red Scotch pad, and 600 grit sandpaper in my palm sander on the rough spots . Came out very nice.
 
You might need an airsickness baggie for this...

Experimenting with color. Krylon Ultra flat woodland green and crystal clear satin clear coat.

I stole the idea of painting the 'T' on the center caps from 916RunnaStunna. Sorry, but I liked the idea. I used my wifes black acrylic paint and a 1/16th inch wide bristle paint brush to do the black.

Opinions?

I don't know if it is the lighting, but I like the color of the center cap better than the rim. The rim reminds me of a teenage mutant ninja turtle.
