Painting Flares to match the body

Guys, I have seen the thread before and now I can't seem to find it. I am looking for the thread to paint the flares to match the body. I recall on the thread, the owner had a limited and painted the flares bumper black to match the body.

He taped it off and did it all him self. Thanks if you know where the thread is located :thumb3:

I can't be the guy he is talking about since I didn't do it myself.

I paid to have this done; everything was removed and sanded. It is documented in my build thread. The thing is though, the fabrication shop removed all the flares and after the whole project was over they expressed what a huge PIA it is to re-attach the limited flares. Also they only use Toyota parts so it was pricy for all the small parts. I did get a steal on the paint though; only $200 for paint + labor but 2 other shops quoted $800-$1000.

If you go the DIY method then you will probably want to use a color that is slightly off such as flat black with gloss black body or dark grey with silver ect.

I say this because I highly doubt you will be able to match (near perfectly) the flares to the body using a rattle can; flares will most likely look slightly off especially over 6+ months time. That is my opinion and why I paid to have them professionally painted. I wanted my limited flares to be painted to match the factory gloss black.

Total price was $500 but I was quoted at most places as $1000.

You might want to look at Blackstar's Build thread, I think he added limited flares and painted them to match. I am not sure how he did it though.

Here you go. UltimateYota.com - I just couldn't stand it any longer! (painted my bronze trim) Bamachem did it years ago to his limited and it turned out awesome. I have been contemplating trying it, but don't have the room right now. Plus I would want a month or so to mess around with the spray gun.

Great work Andy!! Out of curiosity, what did you paint it with, were you using auto paint and a spray gun? I would have just rattle canned it, but it never would have looked that good!

Sherwin Williams single-stage urethane enamel auto paint, used a HPLV gravity fed gun on a small compressor. Shot it at 40 psig with the feed and airflow turned WAY down so that it was almost like a heavy airbrush.

It sounds to me like the guy did what I could not. He was able to use a gravity gun and automotive spray paint followed by a coat of clear. If you do this you should be good with getting a perfect match. You can go to the dealer (or maybe paint store) and have them tell you your years EXACT factory paint code. Then take that to a place that sells paint. Be sure to use the Toyota paint code based on your VIN and probably should follow up with a clear. I am not a paint expert.

The pics look really good and I second that doing it on the truck is going to be a lot easier then taking the flares off.
