Spray paint will last well if you prep the surface properly, spray good primer, then paint multiple coats and clearcoat over it.

by prep you mean cleaning and then sanding the surface? or should i use a solvent since they have been painted before

I usually clean with windex, then sand down to 220 grit (or 600 if a really smooth finish is necessary), then another wipe down with windex once I'm done sanding, then hit it with wax and grease remover, then I'm ready to lay primer. I usually hit the whole thing with a between coats 3M sanding pad between each coat of primer and paint, not between the clear or on the final coat of paint.
