Sanding is fine to smooth out imperfections, I just wouldnt do it to remove clear coat. I guarantee there's some tight areas where it's difficukt to sand off the clear coat. I wire wheeled mine until I thought it was good, then sprayed it with the stripper only to see all the clear coat I missed bubbling off. Very strong stuff.

I used the ACE more expensive house brand and some cheep paint brushes.

I used paint remover and then a sander with 300 grit on the flat surfaces. Etching primer and VHT







its relatively difficult to get a piece of sandpaper inside where the lugs fit...



how crucial do you think it is to get in there if using many coats of self etching primer....?



i am not ready to deal with the mess of paint remover/aircraft remover...



i have a little portable sander that is doing good work of the major dings in the rim...



just trying to smooth out everything as much as possible...



if there is any clear coat left on the rim after a good sanding will this prevent the primer from sticking>?

h8 to start a new thread but i think there is something to be said of how much RIMS need to be prepped before paint.... i think with RIMS that have been painted many times over, paint remover is something to take advantage of... with RIMS that just have the factory coat... get it roughed up and paint. just curious to see how big of a scratch is too big to fill in with primer and paint?...

I only used my 6" orbital sander on the flat surfaces. I didn't care too much about the places covered by the center caps. I did wire wheel areas I couldn't hit with sander. And it took a few coats of paint stripper to get them clean. Someone before me tries shooting the rims silver.

I did about 4 coats of primer then about 7 coats of paint. Of coarse the tire place left some scratches. I haven't touched them up yet.

I am straight up hating life right now...


I sprayed the rims with paint remover and all it did was bubble up...

I'm trying to sand it all away to leave a smooth finish but it's now harder and more work than it was before to sand the rims..

I'm getting pretty frustrated with these rims and just want to take them to get sand blasted so I don't have to deal with this BS...

Suckzzzzzzzzzzzz. Any suggestions at this point would be helpful

Are you military/know anyone in the military? The base auto hobby shop usually has a small sand blaster for wheels. They did mine for $8. Saved me hours

I don't know anyone except my parents and my dog. Lol. Pretty much fell off the map with my friends although they wouldn't have access to any of that stuff..

I'm thinking it may be well worth the suffering and heart ache to get these things sand blasted and call it a day on the gosh darn sanding...


Just a total bummer I spent a lot of time and ended up trying out the paint remover stuff and it just set me back.. :-/

Ya I went the route of sanding, priming, and painting rims on my old car. Then on my 4Runner, I just took the wheels off, scrubbed them good with dawn dish soap (good degreaser), hosed them off and sprayed them with plastidip. No need to tape off anything since the excess peels right off.

That was 5 months and 6,000 miles ago and they look good as new. You can even pressure wash them and the plastidip won't come off.

I also did the door handles which came out really good too.

Plastidip is good for people who are noncommittal and a tad lazy...like me! But if done properly it looks good. If done poorly, it peels off and you try again.

Did you follow the instructions? It is supposed to bubble up and then be sprayed/scraped/scotch brite pad'ed off. Try more stripper, at this point it can't hurt. Sounds like you had a lot of clear coat on the wheels still. If I wasn't in md I'd happily help.

It took me about 4 applications and I constantly rubbed the stuff with the brush to help remove the paint and clear coat.

If you have a monument shop in your area that does headstones and such. They will blast wheels real quick and easy. I've had 3 sets done at our local monument shop for $40 each set. They can blast them in literally 20 minutes. Their blast cabinets are huge and get the job done quick. I have a blast cabinet for smaller stuff but will pay them all day long to do wheels.

since i started to use the paint removal spray i need to use more to continue the process that it started....

i have a rim that got ruined from a previous purchase that i had been practicing on and although i only just sanded that one... a quick coat or two or etching primer and some black made it look awesome...

these 5 stars have proven to be more work than expected...

its really not that hard I'm just making it way harder than it should be.

the first thing i'll do is post pics however there are tons of pics of people that painted their rims... mine just had a lot of drama to go with it..
