I have a couple of folks who wanted in on the run that I haven't heard back from, so there are a couple of sets still available if someone else wants to get in on this.

Thanks man. I'm with you, can't wait to see the result - but I trust the tech here and it gels with my racecar setup world, so I'm confident.

Got a couple of more areas of the rear suspension to think about/noodle about design-wise, then I'm looking at some other stuff. (I love these trucks)

to tell the truth, I'm looking at why the tie rods would enter the steering knuckle from the bottom (inducing bumpsteer) and thinking about angled drivetrain lifts to reduce wear on the front of the rear driveshaft - but keep that stuff under your hat. :)


Dude I've been thinking the same thing about the tie rods! Trying to think of a simple/effective way to either flip the tie rods to the top or run heims to get them on top. Makes no sense to mount them like they did.
I know you guys are both very knowledgeable about suspensions, so maybe there's something I'm missing.
As far as I can see, the tie rods are parallel to the LCA- just how you want them to be for the LEAST amount of bump steer. The lesser angle on the tie rods, the better- I agree. That being said, your steering geometry will be all wacky if your arms aren't at the same angle as your tie rods. Making your tie rods flatter- ie putting them on top of the ears- with your arms not flat will actually cause worse bump steer... you with me?

Yes and no - in an ideal situation your tie rods will be horizontal coming out of the rack AND parallel with your A-arms (horizontal A-arms are best for handling and less impact on bumpsteer, but getting the tie rods horizontal would be second best for minimizing bump-steer)

We can't have both on lifted IFS, so horizontal tie rods would be preferable, I think (and I think would minimize rack rebuilds, actually)

EDIT: I think you're right. On the track cars, we raise the spindles to lower the car, then level the tie-rods - so the tie rods and arms are both horizontal; and we don't have the range of suspension movement that the trucks have.

Exactly; I agree flatter arms and tie rods are definitely best.
But can you prove your opinion on the tie rods being flat with angled arms being good for travel geometry?
As your arms cycle through their travel, your knuckles move "in" and "out"- relative to the frame. If your arms are at an angle- let's say 3" lift on the front- and you have the tie rods flat, when your suspension compresses, your knuckles will move outward, and your tie rods will become at an angle- causing a toe-out scenario. You follow?
We really shouldn't have bump-steer issues on our rigs... the arms and tie rods move together, keeping the tires straight and equal to each other...

I hate to be one of those guys; but our IFS is holding us back a bit. #challenge
