Papabeach's Mod Thread

Thanks for the compliment! I have Slee duals on my 80 series as well and really like them. The tables here are great but the other significant bonus is the lack of clearance required to open up the arms as compared to a single swing arm. I will say that CBI doesn’t make a lot of these rear bumpers and they forgot to drill some holes, some holes were misaligned and parts were missing. It was all fairly easy to fix and they were easy to work but the experience was a little annoying. If you choose to go this route I would ask CBI to test fit all the pieces and check the packing list before shipment.

They've been losing customers left & right on their rear bumpers for years now. One because of quality & two because of price. Shrockworks, 4XInnov & Savage have been eating their lunch.

What you got cooking up on your builds for this new year my friends? @papbeach

Hmm...cargo storage solution, double din stereo, back-up camera, re-do some switches, more lights, fishing pole storage solution, maybe repaint hood, rear hatch window control from cargo area, MORE TRAIL TIME!

Trailer Harness is the Problem!

So...ever since I installed my rear LED turn signals I have been experiencing a whacky problem. Turning on either the right or left turn signal would also periodically (R>L) cause the rear brake lights to flash. I found this out when I was driving down the interstate with the cruise control set...every time I would hit my turn signal my cruise control would disengage (by triggering the brake light circuit). Super annoying! And seeing as I haven't towed anything in the last 10 years I decided to remove the trailer harness thinking it was not LED compatible and/or it had some type of problem.

Well...problem solved! No more blinking brake light with the turn signal. FWIW, the trailer harness was an aftermarket one as my 4Runner didn't come with the tow package. Anyone know of a LED compatible trailer harness if I every decide to add one back?

As a bonus to further remove annoying problems, I greased the latch and the pins on my rear swing arms because they were getting squeaky and I replaced the worn down felt padding on my spare 20L fuel tank as it was starting to rattle and drive me nuts. Crazy how these little things that don't really matter much add up until they finally get addressed. Ooh and I ordered a new high lift cover (Yescom http://a.co/cZa12Sn) as mine was super faded (High Lift brand) and was starting to rip....wish these things lasted longer and weren't so pricey...trying to keep the rattles to a min.

Next up on list of annoying to-do's and one day projects is contact OTRATTW for some replacement switches as I have multiple burned out LEDs...

BG EPR/MOA/44k/Mobil 1

Maitenance and cleaning day...not too exciting (controversial use of BG oil assoc products to some...)
-ran a can of BG EPR through the crank case...oil def came out black, maybe a tad quieter idle...didn’t really have a problem to begin with...
-Mobil 1 Full Synthetic oil change and Mobil 1 extended life filter
-added a can of BG MOA to fresh oil in crank case
-greased propeller shaft, sway bars and some other squeaky parts
-added a can of BG 44K to gas tank
-replaced missing bolt for fold down table on rear swing arm (guess it rattled off)
-added some adhesive foam padding around my spare 20L gas tank to get rid of rattles
-wash , vacuum, interior, windows
-drank a cold one & went fishing!

Finally replaced broken Fob...nice upgrade. Thanks to infamousRNR for the recent post that these were available.

is the key fob standard issue for the highlander? or did I just miss it in your write up? I wasn't aware of any remote options.

haha I know the fob case is aftermarket, i mean the system that the key fob functions: (lock/unlock/rear window up-down) is that an aftermarket system you installed or was that standard on the highlander model?

I dont have a key fob for my 4runner. but I would like one.

Apologies, I obviously misunderstood. I think this function came on multiple models...is it possible your 4Runner has the capability and you are just missing the remote?

Good luck and if you find out you have the capability and only need to buy and a program a new fob, please post your solution and/or lack there of I suppose if it doesn’t work out...sure there are other curious folks out there. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Wheeler's Front SuperBump Bump Stop Set--INSTALL

I have no excuse for not doing this when I had my front end completely apart. Doh... Well anyway, I put them on the rear of the arms as recommended by Wheeler's. I hope I got the screws torqued enough...can't get much leverage in there.

Anybody ever have theirs come loose or fall off? Any suggestions?

Got the rainy day blues....so after I installed some new bump stops I bought a smaller supercharger pulley!!!! URD 2.1 here we go. Figured I kinda had to do it since I need to change my drive belts...I mean...I should change my S/C pulley when I change the belts right?!? Reasonable logic...right???

Ah...you got me, totally haven’t installed yet...between a week long trip to San Diego the back log of work that built up while I was gone and family in town I haven’t installed yet. Ok mainly just hasn’t been a priority aide from all my excuses... With that said I am about 10 hrs into the most aggressive exterior detail...wash, clay, wash, compound, polish, re-polish and soon to wax...has turned out great so far but not for the faint at heart...all by hand, Meguiars products, will post some pics when done...hopefully pulley goes on next week.

Exterior detail

Exterior detail complete
-wash, compound x2, polish x2-3, liquid wax (all Meguiar’s products). Probably at least 10hr of work all by hand. Cell phone pics don’t do it justice. Very pleased! Didn’t put anything on the trim yet...undecided at this point.

Fishing is getting good on Tampa Bay

Just finished rewriting my trailer harness...had a bad module that need replaced, finished putting together my new trailer and landed this 42” pig of a Snook and a nice speckled trout! Hobbies collide...not enough time in the day!

Holy jebus that's a big fish! Well done. The 4runner is still looking great. I am always impressed by how clean some of you guys get your 4runners. I know black is not easy to keep clean. Heck, I have a millennium silver, and a day or two in my neck of the woods combines just enough rain, with just enough pollen and road grime, and voilà dirty... lol. I really dig the way the front of your vehicle looks with the Shrockworks bumper and the satoshi grill. They compliment each other well.

Thanks for the kind words...because of the salt and sand around here my 4runner gets a bath frequently. My satoshi-ish, billet insert, Line-X, Frankenstein grill was my attempt to do something a little different. I am pleased with how it all turned out.

Not much work on the truck lately...more fishing than anything but I finally got around to replacing my dead FOB battery (CR2016) and added some vinyl letters in the recessed letters on the back. Pretty simple...it’s the small things .
