partial coolant flush

Hello,

Never done a coolant flush before and need some help. I know this is not a complete flush and there are two other drain points, but i want to keep it simple and plan to do more it frequently.

here is what i plan to do:

i am going to drain the radiator with the petcock valve. Once it's drained, i will close it and refill from the radiator cap, correct?

how do i ensure i purge any air from the system?

Buy a spill free funnel to purge the air. It will save you a lot of time and coolant.

shouldnt need to purge air if you just refill the radiator. fill it to just under full then run the engine to operating temp with the cap off, squeeze the top & bottom hoses a few times while running. then let it cool & top it off again & put the cap on. fill the reservoir to midway between the 2 marks & go drive it a few miles at operating temp & let cool. check the reservoir level & add if needed.

the overflow jug is not air tight & as you drive any small amount of air will purge itself. only when you do a full block drain is there more chance of air trapped below the thermostat, but it will usually still purge out after some drive time, or you can pull the thermostat & fill the block there to avoid trapped air in the block. the spill free funnels work too but are overkill for most vehicles if you refill the coolant & run with the cap open for awhile.
