Penetrating Oils -- WD40, PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench.. What works BEST?

About to remove my running boards and searched which is best to remove rusted bolts. Found this on another forum as I was searching and thought this could be helpful to others:

In 2007, Machinist's Workshop published information on various penetrating oils, testing various penetrants for 'break-out' torque on rusted nuts. The torque load needed to loosen the 'scientifically rusted' bolts using the various penetrants were as follows:


No Oil used .................................. 516 pounds
WD-40 ................................... ...... 238 pounds
PB Blaster ................................... .. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ................................127 pounds
Kano Kroil ................................... .. 106 pounds
50% ATF - 50% Acetone mix............53 pounds

Kano's Kroil is great but expensive. Every time I touch the spray nozzle I see quarters being vaporized into the air. But it works.

Another go to for me is CRC 656, which is used in the marine industry to loosen frozen bolts. I have probably 25 cans of it lying around here and there in my garage. My brother is putting a can in my coffin when the time comes.

I have to second the opinion on Aerokroil from Kano Labs. This stuff is high as dope in price but it seems to work better and faster than PB. I discovered it at an aviation facility where they were using it in the dis assembly and re-build of small plane throttle bodies. I have to say, it has been a night and day difference for me. This stuff is pricey but AWESOME!

LOL, isnt that what oil does. Displaces moisture.

The best method I've found is heating up with a torch. Works better than any of those. But if that's not possible, PB has worked ok for me.

OP, that "study" comes up all the time. I decided to trial the 50/50 mix against PB Blaster, and it got it's ass kicked. I had lug nuts rusted so bad they were torquing off - I used the 50/50 on one side and PB Blaster on the other. The studs that got PB Blaster came free after two days of soaking. The studs that got 50/50 didn't come free after four days of soaking, I had to use PB Blaster on that side too.
