Performance cams

I blew my hg back last August and finally found some time to get everything fixed up. While doing research I read on YotaTech that performance cams can help prevent hg breaks down the line because it opens the valves a tiny bit earlier. Well unluckily for me when I pulled my right cam it was damaged

So my questions are;
Does anyone think I can safely squeeze a few more miles out of that cam? Lobes are fine and I wouldn't be able to tell there was an issue if I hadn't started pulling things apart. Normally I wouldn't ask, but money is so tight right now if I could squeeze some more miles out of it that would really help

If anyone has/knows what performance cams they were talking about on YT and whether or not its true about them helping with the hg issue?

Any information would be very helpful as I have no clue. I'd rather spend a few extra bucks and get the better cams that'll help in the long run if I have to replace the old ones

I wouldn't risk using that old cam. I would be afraid it would come apart more. If you have to drive it to make $ and you can't afford to fix it then that's a tough decision. I'd spend the $ & get the new part asap if you need it for work.

Mine needs work but I don't drive it to work. Just in emergencies if my commuter breaks down & on weekends for recreation.

I'm not 100% sure the cam got the damage in the block honestly. I haven't found those missing junks anywhere in the engine and I know I'm not the first person to rip into the block, and I know how much of an idiot the PO was. My theory is he probably dropped it a few times while he had it out.

Don't use it and don't waste money on upgrading the cam it's just not worth it in a 22re.

theking11863, I had a Compcams 261 in my 22RE and it made a noticeable difference. I wouldn't normally upgrade a cam in a 22RE or 3VZE, but like you I had to replace it anyway so I spent the couple extra bucks and I'm glad I did. I'd look around and see what cams guys are using in the 3.0 before pulling the trigger, but if you're planning on keeping the truck for a long time I think it'd be a good investment. Headers, too, they're not cheap but they'll help prevent future head gasket trouble too.

Yeah that was my initial thinking too when I first read the article on YotaTech, why I didn't save it. I need to find it again and pay more attention to the cam section. I could care less about the performance aspect, my priority is the HG, but a few extra ponies would be a nice bonus.

I would love some new headers but right now they are just not something I can do. From what I've read on YT, if you use MLS HG and get the heads and the block machined well the issue is supposed to go away. I'm skeptical but I'm willing to try it out. I' will be heat wrapping the crossover pipe while I'm in there. Not as good of a solution as a header kit but it should help

I read it in haste I guess my apologies, ether way the 3.0 and 22re are not worth putting performance parts on or repairing. So many engine swaps can be done with little work and lower costs that offer better MPG and performance. I lost my taste for the stock engines and I guess that's fallen over to the forum end as I have read thousands of posts about people throwing large amounts of money at those engines and ultimately dissatisfied with the final result. I will curve my bias from now on sorry guys.
