Pick Up a 2013 LTD or Wait for the 2014?

Well, it's about time to retire my 06' LTD V8 work vehicle and get another 4Runner. I have not had the chance to drive a 5th gen T4R yet but my current rig is about to hit the 90K mile mark and I'm ready for something new(er). I've looked at getting used but the price savings between new vs old is minimal.

I am currently looking at a 13' LTD 4WD Blizzard Pearl w/ black interior. This is the only combo I'm looking for and have gotten a few quotes online with the lowest being $40,800 + TTL. I'm not looking for a ton of options beyond nav/backup camera so this is basically what this car quoted has.

As we all know, the 2014 was just announced and now I'm wondering if it's a good idea to pay $40K for a car that will be refreshed by year end. Like most of you, I didn't care for the look of the 2014 but I felt the same way when the 2010 came out. I hated it! Now, I've grown to like it and I'm sure this would probably be the case with the refreshed T4R.

So.....what would you do? Get the 2013 or holdout for the 2014? I'm sure the 14' will be selling for MSRP right out of the gate so getting a 2013 will be about $5k less. While I like the Blizzard Pearl, I'd prefer the Super White that's making a comeback on the 2014.

It seems it would come down to appearance and the minor tweaks the interior has. Whichever one you like better because mechanically it's essentially the same vehicle! If you're looking for a deal, maybe wait until December thru early 2014 to get some leftover deals on the '13 if a deal is what you're looking for.

Personally, back in early 2010, I test drove a 2006 Sport and I didn't like how it drove at all. Felt very loose and not as tight and beefy as the Jeeps. Anyway, the 5th Gen rides much more solidly- it feels very planted and solid to me. My initial feeling was the full-time 4x4 felt a little harsh/grindish compared to the 2wd/part-time 4x4 but I don't notice it anymore.

1) I say buy now and be happy. Its like buying a computer. put on blinders and buy what you can "see". Thinking about what "could" change in a year will always have you waiting another year. if you want it now...buy it now.

3) I got my 2012 limited, with entune and 3rd row, rack and mats for 39,205. msrp was 43,215.

4) New front end is butt ugly and you cant fix that ugly...

@OP - What you looking for out of the truck.
The Tech in the 2014 model is going to be much better.
That would be honestly the only reason I would wait out for the 2014, that and the memory seats.

It might even be to your benefit to wait till the 14's come out and get a steal on a 2013 and have some extra cash for mods.

Well, the "get a '13 or get a '14" threads have started. One of many to come.

That's 2 assumptions I'm not so sure I agree with.

Anyway, with that stable, you can evidently afford either - so get what you want, which seems to be the '14 (I certainly would).

It you were looking at Trail Editions, it would be a tough call. Since you are looking at Limiteds, I'd go '14 assuming the chrome touches on the front aren't terrible (or are easy to Plastidip). I've just really grown to dislike the "body kit" and "chrome" on my SR5. I'd also want the all black interior trim, gauges, and new head unit. Hopefully we see the '14 SR5 and Limited soon.

Common sense says to wait for the 2014 since much of the interior has been improved even if the exterior changes are a non-factor. You also haven't seen the refresh in the available colors yet either.

And if you haven't driven one, I suggest you do so extensively because it is nothing like your current truck. Don't assume you will like it because you may find that a JGC v8 or a Sequoia is more what you're looking for from a power and ride quality perspective.

IMO, easy decision here. Wait so you can properly compare unless you are in some kind of rush.

For a LTD, get a 2014. They have a new leather color coming and it's just gonna be a but nicer. My only complaint about my 12 LTD is that the leather is a bit low rent and the dash trim is scratch prone crap. Both of those issues are addressed in 2014.

All I can say is I'm thrilled I got my 13 TE...because the front of the 14 is an absolutely deal breaker for me.

Looks waaaay to Transformerish to me....just don't care for it at all.

The interior details on the 14 are nice, but not enough for me to have a different opinion.

Thanks for the input everyone! Lot's of great advice. Thought about it some more today while changing the oil in the 06' and I'm leaning toward hanging onto it until the 14' comes out later this year. If it looks hideous in the flesh, I'll score me a deal on a leftover 2013.

I am going to go at least drive a 13' on Monday or Tuesday so I can see how it compares to my current rig. As I mentioned, the T4R will we used for work and I typically put about 12K miles on it a year all in a 4-6 month time frame. No real off-roading and I use it to tow my trailer/motorcycle a couple times a year so a V8 isn't "necessary" but it's always nice to have. :biggrin2:.

Most of the miles I drive are highway miles so I'd prefer the Limited over the Trail Edition with the leather interior and creature comforts. I am a sucker for the Sport Edition/TE hood and I currently have the hood with the scoop on my 06'. The exterior of the TE does look better than the Limited/SR5 but it just seems too stripped down for what I use it for.

I've already gotten over the shock of the exterior redesign for the most part; the raised cross bar in the grill and silver facia treatment being my two biggest objections. I'm not sold (yet) on the new interior, preferring the orange display in my SR5 and the 10-13 Optitron display over the one on the press photos. Actually seeing one may change my mind. However, would I hold out for a 14 if in the market today? Party Mode, baby!

I agree with the few that said this same thing, to wait till the '14 comes out and see it in person and give it a drive. I had decided a few months ago to get a '14 4Runner and when I saw the and read about the new redesign last week, I'm stoked! I can't wait to see it in the flesh and what the Limited is going to look like. So far the only pic around is the new Sport/Trail, which I happen to like. I love the Salsa Red with Silver. As you can see, this is what I have now and love.

Wow that sucks. I really like the '14 updates but just got a '13 limited yesterday. Paid 39k including dealer fee with nav and auto running boards, couple other minor options. Nice upgrade after owning an SR5.

I like you figured the new models will be going for close to sticker for a while and didn't want to wait.

If you're that intrigued by the 2014, wait. I bought the '13 recently and have no regrets. I was sold on it's looks and wanted to ensure I got the model I wanted.
