Picked up a Scangauge II on the Cheap

Bump, how's the location of your gps working out? Seems it would be a distraction to have to look straight down to see it while your moving in traffic?

I know you can just listen to the voice guided directions, but if you have a unit like I do that speaks directions and street names (not just "turn left in 20ft"), then you know how soft those spoken street name voices are. They are much softer than the standard direction voices...even at full volume. In my case, it helps to see the map too in case I miss a spoken direction. Plus it's not a major distraction looking down where my gps is mounted. I can't imagine having to look straight down at the cup holder to see it...that and I'd be too worried either the passenger or myself would spill a drink on it.

Wish I could take credit for it, but it's a Pro-Fit VSM (vehicle specific mount). Uber pricey, but oh so worth it.

also how do you guys caibrate the tank size? 18 or 19 gallons? since the gauge doesnt do .5 increments

Per the manual, you take the lesser number. Another words, since our tank is 18.5, enter 18. :bigok:

Hey, not bad on the mounting. I was actually planning to mount mine about an inch below where yours is. What did you use to mount yours...the supplied velcro or something else? Hard to tell from the pic.

BTW, I just got mine back in the mail today. Going to mount it soon.

i mounted mine using some aluminum brackets that i had sitting at work i modded them to fit the scangage. so if you need som of those backets let me know and ill send some your way so you can fiddle with them to see if it works for you.

That would be nice to find out. I know on YT, they're all wondering the same thing. Nobody has both a Scangauge and a standard gauge to compare them against each other. There is the possibility that based on where it gets the temps, it could read at least 10 deg hotter or cooler than a standard gauge that is pulling it from the cooler line.

when i talked to Warren at Scan gauge sales he says the 99 p probably has a temp sensor on the tranny and not a switch that's why it could read tranny temps.

You are correct. Since you've already spoken to Warren, I called my part's girl at Toyota instead. She said the temp sensor is on the passenger side of the tranny, near or at the bell housing. Said it looks similar to an O2 sensor. If it's not too high on the tranny and able to see it, the part # listed on it should begin with 89429.

I wouldn't say "take the place of". The SGII can record trip data, but not your milage. Say you have 93,286 miles on your OD, you can't enter that number in and keep a constant log going forward.

But if you need it to record trip data, then yes, it can do that.

Thanks Rock Slide, thats what I needed to know. I'm assuming that upgrading to bigger tires would throw your odometer off. I was hoping that I could an accurate count with the SGII.

Yes, upgrading your tire size will throw your OD off. For example, I'm currently running 265/75s. Comparing my mileage between fillups, if my OD reads 275 miles, my garmin GPS reads 287 totals miles. So yes, your stock OD will report less actual mileage.

However, the SGII can account for this. I currently have my SGII set at a 3% margin. This is calculated by the following equation where 31 was my stock tire size and 32 is my new tire size: 100 x (1-(31/32)) = 3.13%. The SGII only uses whole numbers, so 3% it is. I then compared the mph on my SGII to that of my GPS and the SGII mph now matches my gps spot on.

Oh and the SGII also has a calculation for changes in gear size.

Interesting. This sounds like a really cool gadget. But one's milage counter would be off too, not just the trip counter, correct? You would have to bust out the calculator every time you wanted to know how many miles were actually on your truck.

Yes, adding larger tires will cause both your stock OD total mileage to be off and trip logs A&B to be off. Of course speedo will change too. But, that's the price you pay for changing the stock geometry of your 4Runner...or any vehicle for that matter.
