Pics of 5th Limited,No Face and pants on the Floor

Yesterday , I took the front and rear bumper covers of my Limited off to pre install/fit the bumper covers for a Trail Edition before being sent to the paint shop.

Some interesting notes are that the inner fender wells for the Trail Edition are different then the Limited/SR5.
Trail Ed. fender wells are about 5inches shorter in the front.I have to order new ones to match the new bumper covers(dang,another 3 week wait for parts) This could be important to how big a tire you can put on a 5th Gen. because that is where I was rubbing. 285/70/17's might fit!

Also of note , they went the cheap way on the spare for the Limited too. They didn't paint it,but left it primer green instead!:bash: see pics
That is important because if you ever damage a rim,like curb rash or something,you can't just swap it out.!

Curious about my wheels. Are the wheels on my SR5 painted? Why do they seem like they are aluminum with no painting on them? Worried because my Explorer wheels were painted and they started to bubble rust around the lug nut areas.

And add that to the stupid barn door on the GX460. Yes, these engineers are getting ridiculous. But sometimes, I have to admit that they do have bursts of genius (such as the marvelous 5.7L V8 engine).

I went and had my wheels put on my trail this weekend. the wheels were already mounted on 285's. Someone didn't understand what i wanted done when i dropped it off. They called me back about an hour later and said the tires are on, but they are rubbing. They just put my 285's on thinking that's what i wanted done. Anyway, after i explained what i really wanted done, i asked them how bad it was rubbing and he said just some plastic up front. so it does look like (on the trail at least) you can fit a 285 with minor trimming and proper backspacing. however i can't believe it would have adequate room to travel.

IIRC (going from memory), the wheel is painted, except for the face which is machined. However, the entire wheel (including the the machined portion) may be covered with a clearcoat finish. I'll have to take a closer look later today.

No, It's that puke green environmentally friendly epoxy primer for aluminum.Good stuff...We use the same stuff in the airline industry.Somebody that has a Limited spare,please see if yours is the same way as maybe mine is a anomaly .

Well ,I hav'nt paid anything extra yet as it was part of the original purchase deal to throw in all the external body panels of the TE. Sucks that the inner fender wells can be a pain to get out because of where the fasteners are and it takes so long to get parts from Japan.I also need the 4 black plastic brackets on the fenders too as they are different on the TE.
All the parts are Not in Stock/Back Ordered and now I was told that they are ramping up production of the TE(Dealer said he has 3 TE's on order) ,so it might be awhile.Not to mention,the gas pedal fiasco going on with them so I'm kinda on the back burner. They said 3 weeks for the order like before.
It was a crazy madhouse over there at the dealership today. I asked if they wanted to hire me to change out gas pedals at $100 a car.I don't think they saw the humor in it.:hiding:

I have a 2 inch lift in the front so it would help some. Ya,I wonder too about room to travel upward when at full flex. Hey ,the Rubicon rig did it but I can't tell if they were 275 or 285's. They make both sizes in the Goodyear MTR Kevlars they had on it. Some Jeep deciples at work swear by them MTR's down here in the mud.Seen them in person? They have some big knarly knobs on them!

Please ,Do look at your spare and let me know. Not cosmolene, that's what I thought at first as I could'nt believe it. I cleaned and inspected it in detail ,then shook my head and walked away.

while you were messing around in there did you see any factory mounts for winches, bull guards or winch bumpers?

just curious on if toyota decided to include these points so aftermarket is easier.

Factory mounts?? Nope, What you see is what you get.They are going to have to be attached to the aluminum double boxed bumper or go thru those 3 holes to where it's attached to the steel frame.
Aftermarket companies like ARB ,SW ,DO will figure it out and make some money,that's what they do!:hungry:

during my research for an offroad truck i was looking between the FJ and the 4runner. the FJ had factory points to mount winch bumpers apparently. not 100% sure on that since its been a while but too bad they didnt do something like that for the 4runner.


i'm sure the aftermarket folks will work something out :hungry:

Haha.....If I find out I'm the only one with a green spare I will.
If not, I didn't buy it at Walmart so there's no returns or crying once you sign the papers and take it home. It's my green spare then.Maybe someone reading this about to buy one can negotiate a properly finished one. That is one of the reasons I mentioned it.

Doesn't really bother me as I don't have original wheels anyways so to me it is a "spare".I'll use it if I get a flat to get from point A to the tireshop.

Looked under my SR5= Black steel wheel
No big deal other than not having a back up matching wheel.
The dealer tried to sell me a separate warrenty just on the wheels and tires..guess he should have mentioned no back up matching wheel! ;-)

I realize this thread is a little old, but saw this while searching for something else and didn't see a follow-up response from any LTD owners on what the spare looks like. Got under mine to take a look this morning, and I have the same ugly green wheel face. I'm dumbfounded as to why they would do this other than maybe it'll resist corrosion better. Tried to get a pick but couldn't get the camera up in there well enough.
