pink coolant and green coolant

Man, just when you thought you have heard it all.....I say he is full of crap! I have never heard anything like that. The red colored anti freeze is propolene based and the green anti freeze is glycol based. You can't mix the two!

The Toyota Long Life Factory Red Antifreeze Fluid is: Ethylene Glycol, diethylene glycol, and then the third listed component is water. Exactly the same is printed on Prestone. However Toyota states that it contains no silicates (that may harm water pump seals) and no borates (that may cause aluminum corrosion/pitting) Prestone also states that the additives in it protect aluminum corrosion.

I believe the two are very very similar or maybe even the same exact product.

I read some where that there was only 2 factories in the country that made all of the antifreeze for all the brand names. They colored them differently for different distributors. I will stick with Toyota because I don't know for sure. :

Pitbull, today I went with a friend to look at a new 4Runner. The problem was that a salesman caught up with us and started talking at us. Here is one of the gems of information put upon us... "The 4Runner is great for off road. It can never get stuck because it has gears that connect the front wheels to the rear wheels. If I could get you the price that you want would you buy it today?". This guy really knows his stuff. When asked what the differences were between the V8 and the V6 he said the V8 has two more cylinders. When asked the differences betweent the 4Runner and the Sequoia he said less than ten thousand dollars. He stated that the 4Runner was the 'best in its class'. You guessed it, he could not name any SUV's it its class, but he knew the 4Runner was the best. I guess someone told him that.

This salesman was right about some things but I don't think he gets involved in his job. It's my opinion, after years of off roading that the better you four wheel drive vehicle the worse you get stuck. And it is correct that a V8 has two more cylinders than a V6 and a Sequoia is more expensive than a 4Runner. And last, he is right about the 4Runner is best in class, no matter how much Jeep advertises in C&D.

One thing I did not do was ask his opinion on red vs green antifreeze.

Coolant


The Toyota dealer said I am not supposed to change the "red" coolant in my '05 SR5 -- and that it is of the long life variety. I do not plan to change it during my 36-month/36k lease.

My girlfriend has a 2002 V6 2WD Highlander that originally had "pink" coolant from the factory (different than the stuff in my 4Runner, though). The manual says to use an ethylene glycol coolant, and the auto parts store had Prestone and Peak - both of which claimed to be compatible with all modern car engines and modern radiators.

I have changed the coolant in the Highlander twice - both times with the green stuff, and she's pushing 79,000 miles & running just fine. I also use the green stuff in my 2002 Sentra, also with no problems.

I am sure I'll get flamed for this, but why would an owner's manual for a Highlander not tell you that you must use the pink coolant if you have to? Just curious.

It amazes me how uninformed people are. I guess they just don't care. If I were selling cars I would read the manuals and reviews on everything. You should be an expert on what you are selling. If you work at toyota you should know toyotas.

I guess those answers would satisfy 90% of ppl today tho... sad

I need to replace my water pump and serp belt together. does anyone know why the water pump went bed? I have been using the pink coolant all the way. I have a 2004 toyota 4 runner. I guess the only choice of coolant is toyota pink coolant right? pelase advise
