Hi all! We are new to this forum so sorry to reply to such an old post. We are getting ready to start the SR5 to TE conversion. one of the first things is painting all the chrome. I am trying to figure out which to do...Plasti dip or Krylon flat black. Thanks!

I painted mine with color match spray paint after sanding and priming, then a few passes of clear coat.

2 years later it looks like ass, clear coat is gone and the paint is rough and scaly - so it's time to do it again.

I was considering either flat black/matte clear, bed liner or dip, along with the bumpers which are all chipped and pitted.

Thanks! I really like the way it came out. As far a prep work, I just washed with warm water & soap then wiped clean with rubbing alcohol.

I just painted mine, I took off the piece instead of taping and prepping the area. It only took a couple minutes.

The dipped front grills look phenomenal. Definitely planning on doing this to our truck soon, as the front hood paint and front bumper paint both look terrible.

What the consensus on using factory match paint ON TOP of dip, then clear dip on top of the paint?

Cleaned up the garage this weekend and found a few half used cans of black and glossifier from old projects, so decided to use them instead of tossing them. Got down 5 coats of black + 4 coats of glossifier.

Tried to remove the grille, but rust has gotten the better part of them. Just taped everything up, sprayed on .. then got the over spray with a claybar afterwards.

im potentially thinking about plasti dipping my grill or painting it this weekend what do you guys recommend, and does anyone have a link on how to remove the grill?

Plasti dip is not a long term solution. I did my grill and after about a year just looks beat. Had my grill and lower bumper repainted, looks much better.

Really like the look of the black grill and will go black soon. Most likely will plasti dip. But was wondering if anyone has just purchased a new black grill? Here is just one source Rock Auto part #TO1200297, there are others. Wonder about the quality of some of these, but for $85 seems like a possible permanent solution, not having to worry about chips and recoating?

I’ll take a close up picture when I get a chance but mine is bed lined black. Never had a problem with it. Used to Plasti Dip it but when bugs splatter on it, it’s a pain in the ass to clean. Bed lining made it so much easier and much more durable. Haven’t had any chips or anything and it’s been on for months now

Really liking the grille with the 4Runner badge on it. Can I buy the badge/sticker used on the grille anywhere?

For those that plasti-dipped the grille - should i remove the grille (I have the 2006-2009 grille)

Does anyone know how to remove the back hatch chrome emblem holder to either plasti-dip it or replace it with a black one? I've found replacements for the door handles, I am plasti-dipping the lettering & I have found black grille replacements but I am unable to find any information on the rear hatch one. Thanks.

I ended up just taping mine off and painting it. The challenge is getting inside the Toyota emblem. I laid masking tape on top of it and used a sharpie to draw the lines... then cut each section out individually. Laid them in there and used a pick to get them seated correctly.

To remove it, just remove the trunk plastic trim 1 bolt at the pull strap, and clips around the edges. Then remove the 10mm bolts that hold it in, as well as the 2 10mm bolts that hold the lock tumbler in. Disconnect the electrical connectors and it comes right out. I found nothing obvious holding that emblem on, which is why I just taped it off. I had planned on pulling the emblem and painting it. I didn't feel like breaking plastic with nothing to replace it with.

I used John Deere blitz black (highly recommend it) ... I used it on the grille and lower valances as well. It has been holding up well to rocks, salt, and washing.here are some pics...
