plasti dip hood?

Ive got a millenium silver 4Runner and recently discovered plasti dip. So far I have plasti dipped my emblems (not shown in photos)

Thinking of plasti dipping the center of my hood, so about the middle 2/3 there is an indendation and Ive seen something similiar on a friends green land rover, any have any ideas or done that?

You wouldn't pass up a free lay if your buddy said too, would you??? LOL

Worst comes to worst, you don't like it, get a new hood, and paint it to match the truck.
 
I never even heard of plasti-dip before I found this forum. And frankly, I think it makes a car look like a cheap econobox... like back in the 80's and early 90's when if you bought the base model, the bumpers wouldn't be paint-matched to the car. At least you can peel it off, I guess.

I think some trucks have black on their hoods (like your friend's maybe?) so that roof lights don't cause glare off the hood...

I don't think it'd suit the style of the 4Runner, but that's just, like, my opinion man.

@OP: i agree with the above, but personally save the racing stripes for the mustangs and challengers.......

i dont think he's looking for racing stripes.


anyway op here is a example of the FJ trail edition, they just wrapped the center portion of the hood, to me that looks very good.

I think it looks pretty cool. I'm looking into plastidiping my roof. Sort of an FJ look but black (my roof is faded). I'd say try it and worst case scenario, if you don't like the look, you can rip the Plastidip off. It's fairly easy to remove if you don't like it. Just throw a thick enough coat so you can peel it in one strip.
 
I have an idea . . . for heavens sake PLEASE do not spray that perfectly nice hood with plasti dip!

A. I dont see the fascination with plasti dip, and never have.

B. If you spray it on the hood as is, it will never adhere.

C. If you sand the hood to help the plasti dip adhere, the hood is ruined (well you could always have it repainted for several hundred $ after the plasti dip peels off, which it absolutely will)

D. Think about your 4runner with the long term in mind. Are you always going to want plasti dip on your hood? Is there a chance youll sell the 4runner it in the future? Whats the purpose of spraying it with plasti dip?

E. This is all my opinion of course. Its your hood, so do whatever you want with it. I just think back on some of the odd things Ive done to my 4runner that I ended up not liking in the long run. And all they accomplished in the end was waste my time and money

yeah like what was said, a different eye for things is what makes the world interesting, i personally don;t like it though, i even don't like the FJ with the hood like that here either, a guy at work has that same FJ and it always makes me think of those crappy $800 ricer cars with $3000 carbon fiber hoods on them, either that or it's been in a wreck....just play'n devils advocate here, if the OP likes it rock it with pride, i'm sure some people out there think my 4runner looks crappy because some of the choices i made, but that's me, i personally only think this sort of thing looks good on the classic muscle cars of the 70's, i don't even think it looked good in the 60's,80's,90's or now...just my tastes, nothing wrong with anyone else's...
 
Go for it! I think this could catch on.
Getting a clean break around the edges when using tape with the plastidip can be a challenge. You need to peel off the tape when the plastidip is still wet, and spray it as one thick layer (not multiple coats) which wont produce a perfect surface both in texture and gloss. Its worth a try as most here have said, because it is not permanent. When removing the tape be sure to have a buddy there to collect it so that it doesn't smear all over the car and fresh wet plastidip. Also spray it indoors to avoid dust and dirt getting in there.

Dont quote me on this because I am not at all sure if it will work, but I have heard of people painting over plastidip in order to make temporary paint coats;
If the surface doesn't come out the way you like (maybe) you can put a thicker coat of plastidip on and then bed liner over the plastidip, for temporary bed liner.

that's kinda your problem

i've dipped my buddys hood and rims on his mustang and it has been 2 years, still holding.

no one ever sands for plastidip, that's the whole point.

takes 5 mins to take the plastidip off with a tooth pick and some soap water.

Makes it look a like an fj80 imo.
I really like it, not sure how it will look on silver. Definitely gives the 4runner a more substantial presence.

PS: Just want to say I recently bought some custom TRD decals from Crawlorado, they were great people to buy from great customer service and speedy shipping!

Ya that's a little high. That's why I'd buy the vinyl and cut it down myself. Plus I'll most like screw one up, and have to do another.

I was thinking the same thing. It makes the bump in the hood more pronounced. I was thinking it would go well with the black flares I have, bring the black throughout the cars lines.
