Function, helps direct all air thru radiator area and also helps keep mud and debris from going into that area.

That piece is supposed to be on your SR5.
It’s call a Radiator Support Air Deflector (Front, Lower)
2016 Toyota 4Runner Radiator Support Air Deflector (Front, Lower). PACKAGE, Body, BUMPER - 5210135700 - Genuine Toyota Part
It’s located between the bottom of your front fender and your OEM skid plate.
Some sort of this deflector comes on all 4Runners.
When the TRD Pros came out, the port was famous for throwing them away instead of cutting them to fit the gap.
Here is a pic on my other T4R after TRD skid plate install.

That is indeed what it states.
Maybe Toyota didn't want their techs spending a few minutes to direct the air into the radiator by cutting the trim!!!!!!!!

I took a few minutes and cut mine on both of my T4R's and put them back on. When I remove my TRD skid, trim stays in place. It doesn't get in the way

Sorry for my incomplete post. I DO have the long radiator support air deflector on my 2016. However the part in the OPs photo looks much smaller and curved. I could not picture where that part would fit. Guess the shape/size of the part changed since 2016, and I should have had another cup of coffee before posting... 8^) Thanks for your info!

It has 4 clips that go into the engine skid. and I remove it so the other plastic part that it covers in front can be removed so I can remove the engine metal skid hooks .

My 2011 SR5 has same setup.
There's 2 plastic pieces, the wide radiator cover in the front with an air scoop and the air duct that tunnels air from the scoop right in to the hole in the skid plate. Which is the part I think the OP posted. I suspect most 4runners are missing this piece because it gets tossed in the trash by the tech doing the first oil change.
The scoop and air duct are part of a "spolier" appearance package from what I remember so I think are essentially useless. That wide radiator cover is there for some good reason though because it comes on all of them.

Interesting. I bought my 2016 new and have done all oil changes. That "scoop" wasn't there from day one. The hole on my skid is open to front with only wire mesh in it. Now I'm curious and will have to start looking under the fronts of parked 4Rs, although that might look odd. 8^) Thanks for info.

This must be an older 5th gen 4runner or other gen 4runner. I installed the TRD skidplate on my wife's 2020 4runner back in July. The standard steel skid plate, which sits under the oil filter, was replaced with the TRD part. The TRD/Toyota instructions said to not reinstall the other plastic cover that Saker posted. I found that odd, but my guess is they said not to reinstall because plastic cover would need to be modified to fit like Saker noted.

from a 2015 Limited. The air duct piece (Engine Air Intake Hose 5281235010) and the horizontal piece (Radiator Support Air Deflector 5210135700) both need to be removed before the regular skid plate can be removed. You can see one grey, round plastic clips on the Engine Air Intake Hose. I have "trim tool" to remove those. They are difficult to remove with out the tool. Its not much hassle with the tool. I like the protection these two covers provide. I thought the air duct piece/hose was only on limited awd and the horizontal plastic radiator support air deflector was on all models. Research shows Sr5 with the "appearance package" also had the Engine Air Intake Hose.

What's the gain from leaving it off? 10 seconds? I just put everything back in place. It really isn't hard to do.
