Plastidip Blackout - Wheels / Rear Emblem

I just registered for this forum to 1. tell you how awesome this looks 2. ask you about how you did the wheels?

I just purchased a black 2010 4runner and will be trying this on the wheels. I sorta like the chrome badges on the black but I think it would look better with blacked out rims. Did you spray the tires also or just the rims? How did you block the rotors? did you just shove some grocery bags back there? Could you go into a little more detail about how you preped/cleaned the wheels/tires before spraying? Again this looks awesome and I hope I have the results that you did.

Thanks first of all, I'll try to answer a few of your questions if I can. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.

Yes, I did spray the tires without any masking on them.

Start by thoroughly cleaning your wheels with soap and water, then make sure they are 100% dry. This is the MOST important thing you will need to do. I pulled out my leaf blower and hit the wheels just to make sure there was no moisture hiding anywhere. Once the wheels are clean you can prep the tires. A good trick is to adequately coat the tires all the way up to the lip of the rim with Armor All Tire Cleaner to start with. Plastidip will not stick well to an Armor All surface. Later, once the dipped wheels are dry, you can peel up the inch or two of overspray around the tires. Driving will also make it peel/flake up.

After you've got your tires coated, clean your wheels with alcohol. I just used rubbing alcohol and a paper towel or sponge. Make sure the alcohol drys and then you are almost ready to spray.

Lastly, cover up your rotors and calipers by threading some painters plastic drop cloth or big garbage bags around the rotors through the wheels. I used .3 mil painters drop cloth from Home Depot.

Now you are ready!

Make sure the dip cans are warm/hot, shake them up and spray light coats about 6" from the surface of the wheel. You will need to let each coat dry somewhat after spraying. (10-30 min depending on outside temp) make sure you clear the spray tip by holding the can upside down and spraying for a few seconds after each coat. You don't want the tip to gum up and spray chunks. I think I did about 5-7 coats on the wheels. You want it thick enough to peel later.

Pointers:

Don't spray the coats so thick that you get drips.

Tape off the valve stems.

Warm the dip!

Don't hold the can too far from the surface.

Make sure to cover your rotors.

Once the dip has set, about a day. You can wash normally, use cleaner on it, and you should be good. It looks good with some armor all on it but I normally just use soap and water.

If you do your emblems the routine is the same. 5-7 coats with about an inch of overspray so you can peel it up to the letters.

"Go Gone" works like magic on dip but you can usually just dry rub light overspray off with your fingers.

How well does this work when you Plasti Dip the rear emblems of the Trail Editions?

I ask because the 4RUNNER logo is on a black plastic rather than chromed piece so I'm afraid the plasti dip will stick to all of it and not pull off like in the Tundra YouTube video.

Only prepped the wheels by cleaning them with alcohol, I sprayed 6-7 light coats and kept the cans warm so the spray would come out even not chunky. If the cans get cold the spray can start to splatter. Also hold them upside down and spray for a second after each coat before you put the cans aside until the next coat. I waited about 30 mins between coats. Best advice is to check out www.dipyourcar.com for hints/videos.

Would love some advice on how you accomplished this. I tried about a year ago and had trouble with the lines. I did my wheels and handles this weekend and got to considering this again. Is there a specific tape I should use? or did you remove the masking after each coat until it dried? Here are my wheels.

Here's picks of the TE logos and center console...I did remove the plasti dip on the rear so it was just on the logo and lettering. Forgot to take a pic though .
