Popped my CV

Hey guys, so heres the story:

I am running the Icon coilover with remote res and the sway bar relocate.
I was trying to diagnose a popping sound coming from my front suspension. I decided to check to see if it was the sway bar end links and was recommended to disconnect one side and drive. If the noise went away, it was probably one of the end links and since they are something you replace in pairs, I was going to do that.

I disconnected the drivers front end link and zip tied it to the sway bar.

I drove around the block looking for the sound and was making a U-turn on relatively flat ground. I then heard a huge pop and pulled over and noticed my cv boot exploded.

From the pictures it looks like the CV boot hit the sway bar...anyone have any thoughts on this? Perhaps I should have disconnected both end links instead of one? Now I'm going to have to shell out 650 to replace the front axle. :doh:

I dont think the CV's were popping per se. I think it was the sway bar end links. It only popped while driving slow speeds over bumps while turning. I could hear it when I pulled into my driveway. I was driving on the highway and went over a bump with the wheels straight, I couldnt hear it.

I ask all this because mine pops when coming to a complete stop and when accelerating again. I can't figure out where its coming from. Icon sent me some larger spacers that go up under the front skid on the rad support brackets but I haven't had a chance to put them in yet to see if that solves it. It definitely rubbed and banged into there as I could see paint missing.
 
Dude, that sucks... I'm sorry man

Wife always tells me "this is a hobby, and unexpected expenses is a part of it" which helps ease some of the pain.

ahh..yea it could be that on yours. I have those spacers installed so I dont think that was the culprit.

Thanks man. Yea, I just want to know what I did wrong so I dont do it again in the future. I am having a hard time accepting it was just a coincidence. Im pretty sure the CV hit the way bar. I just thought if the right side sway bar went up, the left side went up as well, instead of them being opposing forces? Also, there really isnt that much clearance between the CV and the sway bar end link.

I have them on too. They sent an extra set to double up to see if that helps even though I doubt it will. This is now the 4th or 5th case of this popping noise that I have seen recently with these coilovers. :doh:
 
Where did you come up with the $650 price to replace? Koons quoted me $1100. If you need help I'm available Sunday morning. Where in nova are you? I'm out in Loudoun.

just checked..after all that, i still have the popping noise :yield:

If I recall correctly, I had to find longer bolts to double up the washers underneath, just fyi.

I am actually in Richmond, VA. I ended up not moving north, i guess i should change my location.

Have you called High tech Auto? Chantilly Auto Repair | High-Tech Auto & Truck

I ton of forum members rave about them.

The place in Richmond I go to is called Virginia Import. The axle itself is around $160 and labor makes up the rest. Apparently you have to take the whole axle out to replace the boots and since the boot kit is around $120 for both, mind as well spend an extra 40 and get a new axle.
 
On what planet does an axle replacement cost over 600 bucks? I paid a shop to do both of mine and it was 180. Took him 35 minutes. Also if the side still connected drooped down, it lowered the sway bar on the other side, into your CV. My popping sound ended up being the sway bar bushings. When I replaced mine I nearly performed this same test of the end links until I noticed it was dangerously close to my axle when moving it by hand. Replaced end links and sway bar bushings in less than an hour. Used MOOG (made in japan) for both and couldn't be happier.

I should have noticed that...ill blame it on being sick for the past 4 days. A shop replaced your axle for $180? The part itself is around $160. I need to go to your shop!

Just replaced my drivers side cv axel myself with factory Toyota parts.
Yes I've heard of high tech and they suck now that Scott has has moved on.
The $160 axel your referencing is not built to the same standards as the original. Good luck

New EMPI (not remanufactured) axles are $56 each on rockauto right now. Shipped to your door. I've been over 7000 miles off road, full droop multiple times.

oh man...you did it yourself?! I'm sure it was fairly challenging, no?

I see the part online is about $347 from Toyota. The shop I called said they source the part from an OEM manufacturer. ugh. Want to help me change mine? :playball: lol

Fairly easy with the right tools. I could probably do it in under a hour. If you can get to my house by 9am Sunday I would gladly help. I'm also available Monday and Wednesday evening.
