Popping Noise with Jerking Steering Wheel

I have a 2nd gen 4runner and I have always had the single popping noise for sharp turns hitting the stops, I get that's normal.

This is a different noise that sounds the same but is worsening with less and less drastic steering needed and is many successive pops as I am turning (before even getting to the stops). The steering wheel also jerks with the noise, fighting me as I turn into a parking spot or parallel park. I have changed both CV axles (and the sway bar end links cause I got at the CV by removing the links anyways) so those are not the culprits.

Has anyone had a similar issue with their power steering/steering box causing jerking/pulling in the steering wheel when turning? I cannot find any reference to a similar problem but can't imagine this is a unique thing.

Hey I just stumbled across this post. Although, I don't have a 4Runner and not sure how the steering column is put together ....I had the exact same problem on my old Chevy Camaro. You'll have to forgive me since I don't have the tech names for the parts but In the engine compartment where the column exits the firewall there was a fiber disc connecting the column to the shaft, similar to a u-joint, steering shaft coupler? The fiber disc had started to rip. When I turned it would pop and jerk the column. Eventually it got less and less and tore through necessitating replacement. Maybe it's the same or
Similar setup that's worth investigating.
