Porter Cable 7424

i know there are numerous threads about this machine... BUT they added something new ^_^ and i have a question about it

well now they have 2 different kinds of porter cable 7424... one regular and one HD

was curious if anyone has a HD, if so please give me a review of what you think of it

another thing is, i am wondering if anyone has bought anything off www.autogeek.net? because i am planning to buy it off that site

and my final question is, what size backing plate would you recommend?

my plan is to buy the backing plate, polishing mats, etc at autozone, but just buy the machine online because my local homedepot and lowes BOTH no longer sell them... for some odd odd reason

I have the 7336SP (same as the 7424 but with the 6" counterweight) from Lowes. The 7424 has the 5" counterweight. I don't see an HD version, are you talking about the "Ultimate Detailing Machine" (UDM) because that's the new one that came out not too long ago, made by another company. I have purchased a few times from autogeek. they have been pretty quick for me, even being clear across the country. I would shop around, there are plenty of good online retailers that also carry PC's and UDM's and also allow you to put in coupon codes. "autopia" is one of these codes that works at many sites.

Some good sites I've ordered from before are: properautocare.com, autopia-carcare.com, danase.com, premiumautocare.com, detailcity.com.

As for backing plates, it's really confusing. A few years ago, most people were recommending a 6" plate to go along with the 6" counterweight and pads. However, it seems these days people are recommending the 5". I think the majority of people now will tell you to get the 5".

I didn't know autozone sold backing plates? I would definitely recommend getting your polishing pads online however, since I haven't seen any good ones at the local stores around me. Most of the autozones around me only sell those cheap bonnets that come in a box and are pretty much useless for doing anything.

i havent really had time to go by my local autozone to check if they sell pads and backing plates, was just a hope ^_^

and i figured you would say 5 inches... thats what autogeek is trying to recommend to people, which ill probably get

the thing is i want this machine is because i have some crazy aggravating scratches i want to get rid of

based on what you said above so far, i should get the backing plate, pads, and machine online

so im not sure how many pads i will need... and what company is good, like the polishes and pads... also should i buy the polish stuff here at my local shop or online would be better?

when you have time, please make a list for me so i can figure out exactly what i need THANKS!!!

Ahh..okay didn't see the HD version, looks like it just has a heavy duty power cord but the same motor as the regular version. i'm still using the 6" backing plate as I have the 6" counterweight on my PC. just go with the size the corresponds to the counterweight that comes with the PC you get (which will most likely be 5").

the package you posted seems excessive to me, way too many pads than you'll need for one car. I can tell you that the white and orange pads are usually all I need to tackle most of the swirls on my paint. I would just get the UDM by itself (it already includes the backing plate, carrying bag and a polishing pad). You can get 10% off by using the coupon code "autopia" at danase.com or autopia-carcare.com. And then just order a few good pads (Lake Country is the manufacturer I've been using). the white, orange and yellow pads are the most useful to me, the blue and gray ones I pretty much never use. as for polishes, there are just way too many out there. My current go-to polish is Zaino Z-PC, it does pretty much what I want it to do. i've heard good things about the Poorboy's polishes, optimum and menzerna. The 3M polishes are good but they're harder to work with.

i suggest you to go read up at the http://www.autopia.org. there's just way too much stuff about these machines and what to use for me to cover here. plus i haven't really been keeping up with all that's going on in the detailing scene for the past year.

i figured the package was a bit to much also... but it seemed to be well most of what i was looking for just X2...haha

but from what ive been reading on the autopia which i have been all afternoon for atleast 5 hours... because its raining outside and nothing to do

the UDM seems to be the new thing everyone wants and some people have even made videos to well compare the 2 machines

if i have time tomorrow ill go by my local autozone to see if they have all the polishing stuff if not then ill also order those online but at the moment ill for sure go with your advice and just buy the machine alone and get another package that is more fit of my needs/budget of whatever pads

ill probably make another post tomorrow afternoon to have you clarify which packages im thinking of and thanks again!!!

An interesting model. I called PC today to see if they would sell me the longer cord. The parts person could not find anything about it and their website does not show the HD model. I wonder if this cord is added after PC ships or is their parts record out of whack?

im no longer interested in the PC, more interested in the new product that is suppose to replace the PC, they call it the "UDM" so far from what i heard it is not extremely that different but is still better and its cheaper ^_^ with a backing plate

The UDM seems to be a great machine, but there are kinks in it that I believe David is trying to work out.

I believe I read that the next generation ones will have the loose switches corrected vs. having a work around band-aid which will be shipped with the UDM.

and also when do you think or did you read about anything about when they will come out with this new model? i would hate to have to wait a year for them to make another model...

They are having a problem with the switch being loose so if it can turn on a little too easily, and unexpectadly.

David had mentioned that they will be shipping out the current stock with a "fix" - I don't recall exactly what that fix material was, but basically I believe it's a shim that is inserted in the switch cavity (mind you I am not 100 percent sure).

The "revised" model I believe will ship out roughly in September or so. What I was not able to figure out was if David was receiving the stock in September or his e-tailers would be receiving this stock.

Everything I have read indicates it's not the switch will not endanger anyone it's more annoying than anything assuming you were to wear protective eye gear when a polisher would suddenly/accidently turn on.

Since I already own a 7336 - I just bought a set of pads and backing plate to get me started.
