Possible 5 speed swap input appreciated

I assume the computer would be fine as long as its in the same sub generation, ie 2001-2002 or 1996-2000. a bunch of evap stuff changed in those years

I was reviewing your thread on ttora, along with some others.
Whe it comes to the woring and switching pin outs and such, im a litte confused. Did you use the ecu and wiring harness from the manual tacoma?
Was it just the difference between tacoma and 4runner that you had to custom wire?

And am I correct in thinking I shouldnt really have to do much, if any of this since Ill have a 4runner specific ecu and wiring harness?

I actually never ended up swapping out the ECU. My CEL has been on continuously since. I did not use the wiring harness either. Truthfully, I just ran out of time and to some extent money to fool with it.

3 years now and still going strong.

I am just now getting around to getting the ECU swapped out. I actually just found a 1998 4runner v6 4x4 manual ECU that I will be putting in. I will update that thread and may bring the whoel thing over here for posterity.

Hopefully, I can get it done in the next few weeks and update you. I probably could have worked the Tacoma one out if I looked at the pin out diagrams, but it was not worth the trouble for me. There are no inspection implications for a CEL in my neck of the woods, so this has never really been a concern for me.

All that to say, you will be fine not doing anything with the ECU or wiring so long as you don't mind the CEL on. If you need the CEL fixed for inspection purposes, you will need an ECU, but all you will need to do is pull some pins out of your current harness (I think). No further work with the wiring harness will be necessary. I will go back and make sure that is what the solution ended up being, but IIRC that was all that needed to be done with the wiring.

The ONLY wiring I did was for the clutch pedal switches and the reverse lights I think.

Hope this helps. Let me know when questions come up. The swap really is pretty easy. Just a little labor intensive with the pulling and lifting of transmissions.

Ok thats great to hear, and will definitely be checking back with you. I will be dping whatever I can to get the cel off, not for imspecrion, but just because it would driveme nuts, and ill have the parts already.

Hey, OP.

Here is a thread on TTORA where a 3rd gen 4runner gets a 5speed.

I was one of the members over there that went with a manual swap. I had a 4cyl at the time though. I used Mosk22rte's PDF to figure out what wires to de-pin. However if you are swapping harnesses, you should have to worry about it. I kept my auto harness and just removed the auto transmission related pins from the ECU plugs. Other than that, the ECU was a plug n play swap

One think I would caution you on is this. Make sure the plugs and pin layout between your donor harness and current harness match. It would be my luck that toyota would use the same plugs, but switch the pins around.

Edit... Dantheman is already in this thread.... doh...

Thanks for the post man. The wiring is really the only thing that has me worried, but it seems like that won't be too much of an issue now either.

OP - here is a link to a thread on TTORA that will explain what needs to be done with the ECU.

Automatic->Manual ECU swap wiring info - TTORA Forum

Cliff Notes = the ECU MUST be the SAME year as your 4runner. The ECM pin outs changed from year to year.

The fell that put that all together, Jeff, did a ton of leg work. Unfortunately the only 4runner ECU diagram he has put together is for a 1998. This was all done during a time when a few different folks, all Tacomas and me, were doing swaps, Yotaoffroad included. He does have the info there to find your particular wiring information though.

Check out the thread for more info.

Well i picked it up today. Got there and once I got it jumped...bad battery...ran real strong. Shifted through all the gears great. Clutch felt ok. Drove ok for having a messed up suspension and flat rear tire.

Might not even be a concern, but another thing to look at is how the abs gets it's signal. Your two runners are probably the same. I think most 4runners around your year get it from the axles, but Tacoma's and some 4runners get it from the tcase.

The alxe abs signal comes from a sender and wires that would be located towards the outside of your axle tubes on the rear. don't need to look in the front this will tell you all you need.

If it is coming from the tcase there will be a sender at the rear of the tcase on the passenger side. If not there will be a plug there.

It is an easy fix if they don't match. Pm me if you need to know how I did mine.

Good info. I did not know this. My ABS sensors are axle mounted luckily.

TheDurk here is my thread.

From the factory I have a 96 limited v6. So 5vzfe, an a340f trans and the electronic push button transfer case. Button for 4 hi and push lever forward for neutral and 4 low.

I am installing a new motor, so cab easily use whichever wiring harness would be easier.

I have a complete 98, 5vzfe manual tranny wiring harness, the accompanying ecu, r150f trans and a j shift transfer case.

I would love to run the manual ecu to avoid cel.

Ideally, if we can figure it out, I'd prefer the j shift transfer case. It's just less electronics, better durability in my mind. And it fits with my interior trim pieces.

Currently my plan was to use the auto harness, so that I can follow Dan and swimmer boys lead on wiring the transmission up. But I'm unsure of how to wire up the j shift case.

If we can't figure it out. I can stick with my push button but would like the j shift.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Here is the J-shift EWD from '99. I would think the '98 was identical. Did your '98 harness include the ADD control relay shown? I would think the easiest way is to use that relay and connect the J-shift TC to the ADD VSV's indpendent of what you do as far as the engine/trans wiring. To use the J-shift switches with the 4wd ECU from the auto harness probably won't work as, well, you don't have all the switches. But connecting up the VSV/ADD/TC part on its own should not be a problem.

Here is the EWD for the pushbutton TC/ADD circuit. See what I mean?

Ok. So I should have the relay. And basically what your saying is to run the two plugs off the j shift, straight through the relay?

And the biggest problem with that then is that I don't know how to wire up the clutch pedal without the automatic harness....

God this is getting to be a pain in the ass.

Wiring is a definite b!tch! 3 weeks doing my 4WD/5-speed swap and 2 of those weeks were spent wiring.

Luckily for 5-speed, much less involved. I didn't read everything in this thread but I hope you got the swap figured out.

Wiring the ADD switch and relay was pretty straightforward, you really only need the signal from 4H for the ADD signal, I didn't bother wiring the 4L switch since you need to get through 4H first anyway.

My swap was done on a 2.7L but I used a modified R150F trans from a V6 donor truck.

Yes, the ADD only runs off the 4H switch. He needs the L4 signal for his e-locker, though, it appears to me.

I don't understand the clutch switch issue. You are saying you know how to wire it for an auto but not on the manual it was meant for?

Sorry. I don't know how to wire it because it runs off the interior wiring harness. Not the engine harness. And that's a step in the wrong direction I feel to swap that. And if it would help, I've been meaning to do the blew wire mod, to be able to lock the locker anytime...

If I did the 'blue wire mod' could I do what cob said...

First of all thanks for taking a look at my thread. Your about as close to an expert on swaps as there can be.

Do you remember exactly how you wired the add switch for 4h. Do yoh have any diagrams of your wiring.
