Possible to reprogram steering wheel up/down button?

Hi, this is my first post in the 4Runner forum. I tried searching and couldn't find if anyone has come across this minor annoyance with the 4Runner.

I have a 2014 LE 4Runner, my first 4Runner. Great car - love it!
I recently discovered that Toyota programmed the up/down button on the Left side of steering wheel backwards when changing songs when playing a CD. At least to me it seems backwards.

For instance, if you play a CD in a car and want to select the next song normally you press down for the next song, or up for previous song. However in the 4Runner, when playing a CD pressing down goes to previous song and up goes to next song. For everything else the up/down button seems correct (pressing down goes to next radio station in your list of favorites and up goes to previous one).

Does anyone know if there's a way to just reprogram the up/down button when playing a CD?

Maybe burn the CD tracks backwards. Just kidding man.

I could see how this could be annoying when coming from another vehicle.

I have the same issue when scrolling through songs if I have my iPhone hooked up. I'm not sure it makes any more sense to click up or down for the next song. I usually choose the wrong direction simply because of what I was used to with my last vehicle. That being said, I haven't gotten the impression that Toyota put a great deal of thought into the interior.

The button advances different devices differently. XM you push down to advance the stations. Ipod yoi push up to advance the music. The only logic I can see there is the number of the song goes up on the iPod so up is logical. With XM the stations are listed in ascending order vertically on the screen so pushing down is logical. It's pretty quirky and I like it. I think they designed it that way to piss people off lol.

Piff Zipties! That's Tuner crap, it's all about the JB Weld baby! :boink:

Also, Engineers are very very mean people... I mean who the hell buries the one bolt that keeps a component from coming off by 5 other components for no other reason than to cackle maniacally at the fact they just turned a half hour job into a 5+hour tear down for one damn bolt! :infidel:

Slightly back on topic, no there is no way to reprogram the buttons...

How do I remove the buttons on both sides of the steering wheel? (I don't use the radio, CD, Bluetooth, XM, I pod, at all). I'd like to put HORN BUTTONS in their place.:banana:

I'll try that. Then on to figure out how to parallel wire off the existing horn switch that's probably on top of the airbag (without energizing the airbag).

Not sure how the button are wired, if it really bothers you, maybe you could switch the wires on the button.

There's two little plastic covers on the side of the steering wheel itself, you should be able to get a small screw driver to pop the covers off. Under the covers there should be T30 Torx screws that hold the steering pad (the airbag) to the steering wheel. Disconnect the airbag from the steering wheel (I highly recommend you disconnect the battery before doing this with the steering wheel at 12 o'clock and the wheels straight ahead.) Afterward you should see that there's either some screws or just clips that hold the steering control assembly to the wheel. By the way, the buttons and silver plastic trim panels are all one assembly if I remember right.

I've decided to just live with it the way it is:

After 10,000 miles I've learned how to quickly turn off the lady,s voice who talks to me when I've been looking at a topo map on top of the wheel and can now pretty quickly find the horn pad in the center of the wheel when needed.

"muscle memory is a wonderful thing.....

Besides; in another 30 years when the third owner takes over this rig they might actually want those buttons -

Just to make things fun, Toyota swapped sides where the buttons go on the new Tacoma, with the same steering wheel.

I suppose the next 4runner will follow by switching sides?
