A few weeks ago our power steering pump failed. We had no power steering and so we replaced the pump and drive belt for it. We followed the bleeding procedure per the FSM and used the same Dex/Merc ATF fluid as we use for our auto trans T4R. It initially seemed OK. The new pump needed topped off a couple of times , we assumed due to some air in the system. The pump has recently made a whining noise and to diagnose I was turning to full lock on the driveway and suddenly heard splashing sounds from under the truck. It was fluid spewing from the boot on the driver side of the rack. I believe this means that the rack is a goner. Is this a common failure mode? Would the new pump and fluid have caused a seal to fail?
Just solved two other issues today and was happily back from a test drive with a smile when it seemed like a good idea to look into this a bit deeper. That smile quickly became a frown!
