Toyota calls it a Build Sheet. Choose the email option on this page and request it. Be sure to include your VIN. They sent mine within 36 hours.

Correct, I researched this when deciding which 4Runner to buy and it's one advantage of the V6.

Further corroboration, from this thread...

I just purchased an 04 Sr5, following is information I found before and after my purchase. I am posting this here because this forum had by far the most information I was interested in. Not having owned a 4Runner since my 88 years ago I wanted to know what these things were about and what could be done to them. I see many other people asking the same questions I was looking for answers to. Primarily this means mods, and that's why so many links below are to mods. I didn't want to ask a question that had been asked a hundred time so I searched the hell out of the forum, finding and reading tons of info. This isn't all inclusive, just the links I saved while researching and thought it might help others. Feel free to PM me if you have corrections or things I should add.

#2 As on any forum, please use the search feature at the top of the page, or when you are on the main "4th Gen T4Rs" page use the "Search this forum" link just above the first post. The same questions get asked many times and people occasionally get irate about questions that can easily be answered by searching. Chances are someone has experienced your problem or done the mod you are contemplating.

Parts cross reference find out what other Toyota and Lexus cars use a particular part number. This link is the light sensor used in the auto headlight mod, which you should be able to pull from a Carolla or Camry and any junkyard.

Basic 4th Gen 4Runner information
4th generation 4Runners include model years 2003-2009. There are 3 basic models, SR5 (base), Sport Edition (has hood scoop) and Limited (more luxury oriented). There was a Urban Runner package available on the 2008-2009 Sport Edition v6. In 2009 a Trail Edition package was available, this was the only 4th ten with a factory locking rear differential. There are 2 engines, v8, it has timing belt that needs to be replaced at regular intervals and a v6 with a timing chain. All 4Runners feature a locking center differential. From what I have seen, silver is by far the most common color. And yes, if you maintain them they should go for over 300 thousand miles.

2005-2009 are equipped with VVT-I (variable valve timing) and have a 5 speed automatic instead of 4 speed. No manual transmissions are available in any 4th gen. The v6 gets around 20 mpg highway, the v8s slightly less. The 5 speed slightly better mileage that the 4 speed. This can go do with Mods of course. The v8 is full time all wheel drive while the v6 is selectable 4 wheel drive.

The X-REAS suspension standard on the Sport and optional on the Limited offers significantly better road handling, however may limit lift options. The X-REAS system links diagonal shocks to limit body roll during cornering.

Side air bags were an option from 2003-2007 and standard in 2008-2009. All years received safety ratings. Tire pressure monitoring was standard in 2004. In 2007 rollover sensor side curtain airbags were added as well as side torso air bags.

Third row seating was available as an option on SR5 and Limited beginning in 2004. From what I have read it is not feasible to add 3rd row seats to a 4Runner that did not come with them.

2006 brought projector headlights and LED tail lights. The tail lights are a direct swap to 03-05 4Runners. The headlights will swap, you will need to buy the pre-painted trim pieces that fit under the projector headlights. There will also be a small gap between the lower corner of the headlight and the grill due to changes made from 05-06. The 06 grill is not a direct swap to earlier year vehicles.

If you are buying a 4th generation 4Runner try to obtain service records from the previous owner. Any maintenance and repairs done at a Toyota dealership can be looked up online, see link in previous post under New and prospective owners. You simply create an account on the website and enter the VIN number for any Toyota. You do not have to be the owner of the vehicle to do this. You can find the VIN on the tailgate, doors, etc, see boondoggle's post below.

You can save a lot on Husky floor liners at Advance Auto using coupon codes, usually 30 or 40%. Liners are expensive, about $115 for the cargo and $75 for each front and rear. This is how to save, find the best coupon deal, often it is at the $100 spend level. In this case make one order for the cargo liner and another order for the from and rear liners. This should save you $60-80. Sometimes adding a small filler item can get you a better discount. This also works well for batteries.

I have an 05 and was curious about some of the things you mentioned regarding head light and taillight swapping with later models, so thank you. the grill however, wouldn't it be possible to swap that as well as long as you have the hood? say a take off from a jun yard or something?

What an intense amount of info. Many thanks for answering so many questions.

I have been looking, searching and watching every Youtube video about the 2005 4 Runner.
My question if anyone can answer is subjective but maybe worth it.
Looking at a slightly modified 2005 limited V8, miles are high at 250000 but all service is done, timing belt, water pump, plugs, rotors calipers and ball joints. It has a 2 inch spacer lift, Xreas is still there but rear air is gone and replaced with coils and Firestone air bags. Aftermarket rims with new duratracs.
Body looks good except small rust spot either side of the tailgate trim section. Frame looks good and has been oiled.
Interior is clean with no tear, bodywork is nice except previously noted, engine is high but all fluids have been changed with Amsoil, front, rear, center and transmission all done. Secondary air pump seems quiet.
Apart from owning a crystal ball, what else is a concern if anything?

Key isues 2009 TE

Thanks to all who have posted.
I purchased a 2009 TE this month that only had 1 master key when purchased. Looked to be an original key with black trim but it did not unlock the doors or lower window at the rear door (I couldn't even get the old key to go all the way into the driver door or rear door lock). I went to the dealership to get a key cut and explained what I was working with, parts guy asked if I had the key code which I did not, no problem he was able to look it up using the VIN. Got a back up non-chipped non-programmed key for less than $10 from the dealership that operates the locks and back window glass (will not start the truck).
Ordered a chipped key and fob from amazon, link mentioned in several previous posts by others here and had the dealer cut the key (no charge) by the key code they provided. I programmed both the key and fob myself using info from this site. Got lucky all things considered with the key provided. Total spent on key and fob replacement less than $50 includes the back up non chipped key.
Lessons learned:
1- dealership can get a key code from VIN.
2- a master key can get worn out and operate the ignition but not the door and rear glass.

1. 4WD is available for both the V6 and V8 versions. The V8 is full time 4WD if it does have it, while the V6 is not full time.
2. I wouldn't worry about avoiding it, I have it on mine and it is working well at 115,000 miles with no replacing anything. When it goes you can pull the system and stick to regular suspension options if you don't want to replace.
3. The previous owner replaced this along with water pump, but from what I've gathered it is around a grand, or just under that.

Since ctduncan answered the first three questions correctly, I'll pick up the straggler. On the 5th Gen., full time AWD is only available on the Limited. The SR5 and Trail have selectable 4wd just like the 4th gen V6. Which makes sense since the V8 was no longer offered.

I'm fairly sure that's when Toyota started mucking about with the V8 for the 4Runner and thus ruined it. All I know is that the last best year to get one was 2005. This question would probably be best asked as a new thread and not here where it isn't going to get much attention.

Found one but...

We are looking for our first 4Runner, found an '06 V6 Limited with about 130000 miles on it. Hubby said it felt a little loose in the rear end. I don't think it's the XREAS, owner is saying the dealer looked at them and aren't leaking etc.

Could it just need an alignment?

Maybe the rear sway bar bushings are worn out.

I also noticed in your other posts that ya'll were going to be hauling a horse trailer from time to time, if so I would look for a V8 with the towing package (which adds the transmission cooler and brake controller connections), the V6s don't have a heavy duty towing hitch, the hitch is only bolted to the rear cross member and has a much lesser towing capacity and you can't effectively use a WDH (weight distributing hitch) with the "V6" hitch, on the V8 models (at least the USA versions, the Canadian versions I think others have mentioned may not be the same and are equipped with the "V6" hitch) the hitch is heavy duty and goes all the way to the main side rails of the frame and has the maximum towing capacity, if you still find a V6 (or find the V8s have the V6 hitch) you like, I would suggest replacing the "V6" hitch with the V8 hitch or a after market heavy duty hitch that goes out to the main side rails of the frame and add a transmission cooler if not equipped, you may also need to add rear airbags and get a WDH to help with the tongue weight, also if you haven't used a WDH before seek expert help setting it up the first time so you know how to do so correctly.
