Pre-purchase questions for lifting a 4runner.

Sup guys, I currently drive a 2010 Lexus ISF fully modified making around 400 hp to wheel , and I'm an active forum member so I know how you guys feel about first time posters with their questions that can be answered through the search bar. I'm going to be driving in Los Angeles a lot more often so I figured I'd go for a car that I can just drive around and not worry about the road. I used to drive a lifted Silverado so I'm done with trucks cause they're way too big to parallel park haha. Anyways I'm leaning towards a 2014 4runner black sr5 with leather seats.. Before I purchase the car I want to create a mod list so I was hoping you guys can help me..

It'd be nice if you guys can tell me the essentials I need to lift my truck , lift, coils, wheels, tires, and just anything to make my truck look like a bada** truck (led bars etc..) I'm looking for good quality parts that will make the ride seem almost stock or better, nothing that makes the car ride worse.. Thanks guys. Looking forward to be an active member here too.

I've found many useful build threads but barely any that are 2014 but I know that 2013-2014 have the same parts but just getting different views from different people would be helpful.

from reading and searching what I've found is this.

Favorite wheels are 285/70/17. A lot of guys like the Duratracs, Goodyear Wranglers, and Cooper ST/Maxx

Rims are preference. I personally like Method Mesh, Method NV, XD Addict, and some procompusa wheels.

Lifts, popular ones are ICON, Toytec BOSS or Ultimate, and then there's Sonora steel. I am personally going to go with Sonora Steel unless something changes my mind before purchase. Reviews say it's smooth easy on road, and aggressive and comfortable off-road. I travel a lot and get stationed all over the place to the weather factor is huge. Steve with Sonora says his kit wont have rust issues.

Then there's the body armor... Shrockworks HD front end, SouthernSS is making a custom bumper, and so is 4x4labs. If you want the "bada**" look then an HD bumper might be up your ally.

The Retrofit Source Inc has a real inexpensive HID kit to swap out the crappy headlights.

Gobi and Bajarack have nice roof racks. Then you'll probably want a light bar to go up there too.

Depending on your wants you may want to also look at the Trail. It's a real nice combination of usage/durability/and comfort.

If you read through the build threads and all of the review threads you will get the answers you are looking for without needing to have people repost the same info over and over again.

For all practical purposes the parts for 2010-2013 are the same as 2014, you don't need to differentiate between the years. A roof rack on a 2014 will look the same as it does on a 2013, etc. Having said that, there are a few of us with 2014s on here so you can still see what things can looks like. Check out my build thread as well as those who have done significantly more like Gabex35, eisenjin91, Desert Dawg, etc.

Hey Voodoo, which HID kit did you go with at Retrofit?

I'm not back from deployment yet so I haven't pulled the trigger. I was talking with TRS and I believe the suggested the Morimoto HID H9 kit. It was either the H9 or H11. Easy conversion. Again, there is another member on here who has done it already. Search morimoto and you should find the thread to see photos. I'll be doing the same setup as him essentially.

While there are not a lot of '14 build threads at the moment, the only real difference between the '14s and the 10-13 is the front fascia and the interior fit out. In terms of parts/mfgs, many of the older builds should still give you a good idea of quality, and look.

A million things can go into some of the questions which you are asking, which I imagine you already know given what you drive now. Budget, expected use, and preference for look all play a big role. From what you described, a think a great thread to reference (and its a '14) would be: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/168993-desert-dawg-build-what-switch.html

Good quality parts, great pictures, and looks pretty bad ass. This is not meant to be a rock crawler, or a crazy off roader, and is not built as such, but from the sounds of what you are looking for, this could be right down your alley.

A more dedicated offroader: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/154981-gabex35s-build-thread.html

Both good reads regardless!

thanks guys, another vague question is how much would I be looking at for a modified truck. Around 8k? Good wheels, tires, lift, exterior, lights, install etc...

Again, it all depends on the path you go, and the type of parts which you are interested in pursuing. It also depends on who will be doing the labor (yourself, or someone you have to pay). A lot of these questions are pretty subjective to your own preferences and budgets. At 8K you could certainly do quite a job if your mostly orienting this around a vehicle for the street/light offroading/camping.

In a very general sense (no labor):

Lift (basic, but capable setup for what you are talking about, like a Toytec Boss Kit - obviously there are options that can run you thousands more, but it doesnt sound you would be looking for that) = $~1250

UCA = $400-650

Wheels (huge range, but popular wheels like Methods/Fuels/Pro Comps/or some of the specialized customs (SCS, FN, etc.) = $800-1200

Tires (285s like Duratracs or something similar) = $900-1100

Roof Rack (Gobi or Baja) - $1000-1500

Sliders = $450-650

Front/Rear Bumpers (Shockworks, CBI, etc.) = $1100-1700 each

Lights (I mean there are a million - look at whatever your interested in)

This is generic, and wouldnt include labor which can add significant cost. I havent necessarily purchased these things, so I dont know what you can talk people down on, or freight costs, but its at least a sense.

I would seriously advise reading, looking at pictures, seeing what you like/what you would require for whatever you are interested in, and then check out the costs. Any of the stuff I listed above can be found easily with a search, and most people document what it is they are utilizing in terms of products.

Every penny you are willing to spend.

I don't track it, but I would probably average out to $500 /mo on mods and maintenance (oil, filters, tires, but mostly mods). After 28 months my "to do" list is longer than when I started.
