Pro/Con's of 17" wheels?

Not always true, that's why I specifically made a point to list the weights on the to Hankook mud tires I referenced. The 16 inch tire is 3 pounds lighter than the 17 in Tire of the same height even though the 16in is a 10 ply and the 17in is 8 ply

Guess there is no "one size fits all" theory for this.

There seems to be slightly more tire options in 17, I guess not many suv or trucks come with 16 these days. For example you can get C load KO2s in 17 if I remember right, but only E in 16.

why does toyota put them on their new trucks for off roading if they're so bad?

Plus all 17's fit over the Tundra breaks, not all 16's do. Great choice!

Scramble for the win. The 231mm 13wl stamped tundra calipers only fit under 17's. The 199mm only fit under certain 16" rims and all 17's. For anyone thats running bigger tires, the TBU is pretty damn important considering how easy it is to warp a stock 4runner rotor... The differences between the 4runner rotors and the Tundra 231's is pretty drastic. One of my most favorite mods to my truck for sure.

Nope, all factory Toyota 16s except for the 3-spoke (I think) will fit the 231mm. I have 16 5-stars over 231mm and they fit just fine.
If you want the 231mm caliper, it's recommended to go to a 16 if you have a non-Limited T4R, as most (all?) non-Limiteds name with 15s. Otherwise, get the 199mm, wheel spacers, or grind the wheel.

For example, your Hankook Dynapro M/Ts cost

285/75 R16 $199-$216 online (E rated, 10 ply) 59 lbs
285/70 R17 $200-$235 online (D rated, 8 ply) 62 lbs
Both fit on 7.5" rims

I am leaning towards this tire in 17" FWIW :juggle:

Alternatively I have been looking at pizza cutters too, 255/75 R17s (which are 32s)
FIRESTONE DESTINATION M/T 255/75R-17 (C rated, 6 ply) are $170 and I've seen them as low as $145 each
Not my first choice tire based on reviews, but the tread pattern looks good and similar to the Dynapro M/Ts

Hankook makes a 255/75 R17 MT for about $180 a tire in an E rating

I paid around $620 for 4 Hankook MT's - 285/70R17 in LR D from DTD on their Spring sale in 2015. Then $80 locally for mount & balance. That's why I cant spend the money on BFG's.

Now one more question, my truck has not been lifted yet, and I'm not going big on it. I was going to put 99 talls in front, 5100 around and 906's in the rear. Question is should I consider a different front as the 99 talls are made for 16" wheels? I'm just looking for a 1.5 - 2" lift.

Stay with 265-70R17 with 99 talls.

That was my set up back in 2014 with 05 Sport wheels. No rubbing.

FN makes a rim, similar to TRD pro, but wider, search forum here for them, not on website, guy there named Dustin is guy to talk with about them.

Just as everyone said. Prices of tires cost more. Weight of the rim might be 1-2 lbs more each.technicall 17s can clear TBU better but 16s can still clear anyways haha. That being said i rock 17s with 295s but actually wish i got 16s since theyre cheaper for both wheels and tires.

99 talls are great but 99% of the time those of us who initially lift our trucks “just a little bit” end up paying for yet another setup later as our build plans change over time. Take it from someone who has bought/sold/ bought again many lift kits over the years...You might consider going with something adjustable like the Toytec Boss coilovers ( there are plenty of others too) that you can adjust on your own. It might cost more up front but could end up saving you $ and effort in the long run.

I run 17” TRD Wheels off the newer 4Runner with 285’s and have never had issue. I am lifted and had to trim some corners but otherwise it looks great. I wouldn’t go any other route, I get compliments all the time. I live in Colorado, I go 4 Wheeling and have never had issues in trails.

Running 275 70 17 BFG ATs on these Trail wheels. Handles beautifully on and off road. If you are going to wheel hard enough that the 1” difference matters then you prolly need beadlocks

anyhow.

Where did you get those wheels? The stock 17" Toyota wheels that came with my '05 SR5 are beginning to chip and lose their thick clear coat. I also want to get a different look! Thanks!
