Programming a Transponder Key and a Security Alarm Fob

Recently purchased on 03 4runner and these steps did not work. I only have one key and no FOBs. Purchased and cut the key at toyota dealer, HOWEVER the programming steps did not work at all. During the 60 second waiting period, the lights kept blinking... went on for 3-4 minutes. I disconnected the ground cable on the battery in an attempt to reset the computer.

Went through the youtube video and the steps several times, looks like I'm forced to take it to the dealer and sit around/waiting on a stupid key to get programmed.

I miss old school keys and not dealing with this.

Worked perfectly on 2003 4Runner

I just bought two sets of keys and fobs on Amazon for $35. If you put your car into your Amazon garage, it will tell you if your car matches with the device. Some do and some don't and they look very similar.

When they came, I checked​ to see if the new fobs have batteries inserted. They do, so don't waste your time and slightly gouge the plastic checking like I did.

This set of fobs came with its own instructions, but they are similar to the ones in this thread. I had them programmed in about 30 seconds. They do work the back window, all locks, and the panic button on the back.

I took the blank keys to a local locksmith and they cut both for $4. They were actually interested to know how they do this on a Toyota because they were convinced you needed dealer intervention with a computer. Well, they watched me program them in the parking lot in about 5 minutes.

To clarify the instructions, you remove and​ insert the key 4 times, then on the 5th insertion you leave it in and do the door open sequence. Do the 5th key removal after. Somehow my brain initially threw in an extra sequence after reading the flowchart in the Toyota Bulletin.

I used the following instructions for my 2000 4Runner Limited 3.4L 4wd. I'm pretty sure it should work for all 3 gen. The dealer wanted to charge me $110 to program it. It honestly took me less than 5 minutes.

The instruct looks skeptical but it actually works!!! I wanted to share the knowledge and save you money...

1: WITHOUT ANY KEY IN THE IGNITITION- Sit and press, then release BOTH the*gas pedal and brake at same time

2: Now insert MASTER TRANSPONDER KEY but DO NOT turn the key-*and WITHIN 15 SECONDS press and release ONLY the*GAS PEDAL*5 times

3: WITHIN 20 SECONDS of completing step two, press and release BRAKE PEDAL 6 times, then remove MASTER TRANSPONDER KEY

(at this point the anti-theft device has verified that you are the owner of the vehicle apparently)

4: Insert NEWLY CUT KEY (your new key) into ignition but DO NOT turn the key- press gas pedal once (I assume that means pressing pedal to the floor?)

5: WAIT up to 2 minutes until the security light on your dash turns off. When the light goes off, remove the NEW KEY* from the ignition, and press the gas pedal once

6: Your new should now be programmed- if it fails to start the engine, then try the procedures several more times- it sometimes takes a few times because the timing has to be pretty exact apparently

I have found luck in saving a little money programming the key myself. The dealership quoted me $250 for a single key.

I was able to program an two extra keys for only $60 using techstream software.

Where are you guys buying your keys from? I've heard amazon and ebay. Just curious..

Definitely buy keys from Amazon. You can even get it prime shipped. I can confirm that the key offered for the 2012 4runner does work.
